Nazi Pennant - 01/26/22 11:06 PM

A friend of mine found this Nazi Pennant in an old metal box. She believes it was from one of her Uncles that was in Europe during WWII. She does not want it in her house, and was wondering what to do with it. She considered burning it.
Now she is thinking of donating it to a museum of some kind. I don't really know where to tell her to go. What would you guys do with this?

That pennant has historical value so it also has monetary value. As a piece of history, it’s value will increase over time. Kind of like an investment. Perhaps she should just keep it in a safe place.
Are any of her uncles still alive?

After checking the legality of such to determine if legally clear, I would mail it to Dr. Fauci to fly on his vehicle. Would be an appropriate place for such a symbol.

It's more welcome in todays America than the Confederate flag, in fact the swastika seems far less at odds here than in the 1940's.

Contact your local historical society. They frequently do WWII events and I am sure they would want it.

Ask her to please not burn it, she should either sell it or donate it to a museum. Lots of soldiers in WWII brought these pennants home and are still in family collections. One of my great uncles who chased the vaunted desert fox around Africa, brought home a flag that was draped on one of the Panzer tanks.

I believe it's a Kriegsmarine naval pennant. Many WW2 German collectors can be found at gun shows etc, and would pay good money for it.

Google "Nazi WW@ triangle pennant" and check it out, I found a pic of that item listed as a "Fender Pennant", like on the front of staff cars, and listed as $225, FWIW.

I will buy it. Most museums will not except it for two reasons. They will either find it offensive or to common. It would be more appreciated by a collector.

Law Enforcement would most definitely label mailing a NAZI pendant, unsolicited, to a Jewish or black person as a hate crime, especially if the person is famous. I don't think there should be a hate crime designation for any crime, but there is definitely other crimes that would cover mailing it, that should apply, that are right to apply.

My father in law gave my wife his very large Nazi flag that he brought back from WWII. Also an officers dagger. I am a teacher of History and destroying history we can teach from is wrong. Getting rid of it does not make it go away, maybe it helps us forget so we can allow it to return. I take these items into class every year and show them to our students. The flag was signed by his platoon. To my knowledge it has not made any of my students Nazis in fact the opposite. We also teach genocide the holocaust etc. If we are concerned about socialism and communism our young people better understand why it evil and so many gave their lives to stop it.
My students understand the greatest generation and who real heroes are.

My great uncle fought in Europe. I don't know if he brought home any "trophies." But if he did I wouldn't even begin to entertain the thought of burning it or throwing it away... Seems like it would be a serious disrespect to the memory of the sacrifice he made.

Right on, Mike. The men, maybe a few ladies, who survived the war and brought back souvenirs deserve to be respected. Those souvenirs should be family heirlooms! Something to remember their time, their suffering, and their sacrifices. Even the ones who survived gave a lot.
My father was just old enough to get into the navy and serve in the pacific the last year and a half of the war. He brought back a Japanese rifle. I made the mistake of not asking to keep it. Wish I had it now as an extra item to remember him by.

3 options destroy it , sell it to a collector or donate it possibly to the world war 2 museum in New Orleans. It all depends on their motive.

I bet if it were a Rising Sun flag nothing would be thought of it?? My Grandfather brought back a silk swastika flag and a couple of german bayonets. I'd keep it after the relative probably carried it all over Europe.

=============

330 Trapper correctly says, the swastika originated / was first seen in Egyptian symbolism.

There are too many “know it all” historians who simply don’t know, or repeat what they read/hear on the internet.

Actually, originally from the Indus Valley Civilization aka SE Asia, India, Pakistan, etc. area. Not Egypt.

Re: Nazi Pennant - 01/27/22 01:50 PM

My dad was an original Darby's Ranger. He hated Nazis and enlisted before he finished High School. He was wounded at Anzio. When he was shipped back (met my mom on the hospital ship where she was a nurse) he brought a lot of memorabilia back with him. Much of it had the swatstika. He said seeing the swatstika was a constant reminder of what he was fighting for. He also believed that most German soldiers were not Nazis and he had tremendous respect for them as fighters. Don't burn it.

Right there with scalps, ears, and loot from other warriors. This is a war trophy. I would revere it as such. Not for the pennant itself but what it represents. That my family fought and vanquished it’s enemies. And that I have that in me as well. Not to brag, not to show off. But a personal reminder. Be dangerous when called upon.

The Nazi Swastika pin wheels in the opposite direction from the Indian symbol.

Don't destroy it! Those who forget the past, are doomed to relive it!

It was used by some as a good luck symbol way before the nazi’s used it.I know of a brick building here in SE Kansas that has them inlayed in the facade of the building. It was built in the 1890-1900 era.

I know exactly how this lady feels. I felt that way not too long ago after I bought a small gun collection from a widow.
One of the guns was a Walther PP hand gun. At first I thought that it was cool. Then I did some research on the markings on the gun and couldn't stop thinking of the horrible things done by the nazis during the war, and it started to creep me out.
Well I ran into guy who is well versed in everything gun related and he put it to me like this. "We kicked their arsch and took their scheisse!"
That put it all into perspective for me. Now I have a cool relic and a fine gun.
