How long wiil this blade stay sharp? - 02/01/22 05:52 PM

I am thinking about getting this knife with the replacement blades. It will be used mostly for rats, coon, and mink? Approximately how many rats etc., will it skin before going to a new blade?

DakotaLine Wiebe Wicked Sharp BOSS Dog Fixed Blade Scalpel Knife, Hunting Knife with 24 Replacement Blades

Thank you, Guys and Gals.

Maybe get through a few rats. If you don't touch a bone with it, as soon as you do its dull as a butter knife. I hated them, though I bought the original Havalon not this knock off. If you're real slow and careful, almost methodical about it like taxidermy skinning they are for you. If you skin to get the stuff skinned quickly it's junk IMO.

The perfect rat knife IMO is a 4 - 6" Rapala fillet knife and an Accusharp brand (no other name brand works as well) knife sharpener to keep a razors edge on it.

Wiebe is hardly a "knockoff" brand. And they all use the same blades which they don't make themselves. There are way too many factors to know how long one will stay sharp, including the brand of blades you buy. The only way to know if you like them is to try one. Personally, I don't like the blade shape. Some people do.

Actually they make a lot of copies of other products under their brand name. I thought that is what knockoff meant?

x2. The only difference for me is I am using a morakniv with the accusharp from walmart. I also have the havalon, but like ADC alluded to as sharp as those blades are, touch bone or anything other than skin or flesh and it's dull as butterknife.

About as long as a sharp knife lasted you Actor However if your eyes fail you when sharpening a blade might be the way to go

Ironically, I have been using the same Rapala fillet knife for that purpose for about 30 years and is pretty well worn down way past the original sharpening... to the point it will only do one rat before resharpening. The problem I am having is due to mainly old age ... seeing and gripping the longer knife. That is why I was considering a smaller knife that my worn out hands can handle.

Making similar items doesn't mean they copy them. If you haven't noticed there are a LOT of brands of knives out there that all make very similar models. Havalon wasn't the first to make a replaceable blade knife either, but it doesn't mean they're knock offs.

I was given a Haralson from my Doctor with Xtra blades

I like a regular quality paring knife as well.

Have you considered an Xacto knife ? That's what I use for almost all small furbearers.

Easy to hold and light weight. Disposable blades and lots of different shapes. I can skin about 5 marten before I have to touch it up.

I can do like 5 coons with mine before I replace the blade, but that includes touching it up on a steel in-between. You do t have to but the expensive blades, either, you can buy a 100 pack of cheap scalpel blades on Amazon for like $15.

I use a steel for sharpening. One good sharpen job on a diamond wheel then steel the rest of the season. One knife for skinning to the head and a second for head work. I have skinned over 250 critters from the first sharpening. A decent steel is the way to go. 3 seconds with a steel and I am rolling again.

I buy the cheap rough rider muskrat off of ebay. 2 blades the same. About 15$.
I have used the same 2 knives for over 5 years so far with plenty of life left.

Have you tried the sharpener I mentioned? Maybe just time to buy a new Rapala, maybe the 4" one. $18 here... https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product...date?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true
