Well, it looks to be a step up from a small SUV. I don't hate it. It does seem to come in a lot of stupid colors though.

I think it is like the Honda-not a real truck-no frame-unibody.

We'll be getting a bunch in our fleet soon. They're based on the Ford escape. For what most people use a truck for, they'll work just fine.

20K would be doable!
The little woman got a Hyundai Santa Fe with a 2.5 Turbo. It should be great on gas but the Turvo is too much fun and it gets about 23 in the city.

We have a lot of city workers that claim they need a truck. "We need to haul stuff!!" "We can't fit our load in a car, give us a 2500!!!". They whine and complain and claim that they need a big truck, and then they come in and they'll have a shovel and a broom in the back. Or nothing. They do they same thing with tool boxes....they claim they need these big chrome fancy tool boxes, so we special order them and mount them, and then when they come in for service, they have a pipe wrench and some utility flags in them. The fleet manager is putting an end to that. He's been making a concerted effort to look in the back of all trucks as they come in and make note of what they regularly carry around. If they're not making use of a full size truck, and they insist on not being put in a car, they'll get a Maverick, or maybe a ranger. If they have occasion to actually haul something, they can borrow one of the heavier trucks in their department.

As far as that cop, I don't know. I meet a lot of cops. The names familiar.

Looks like you could maybe haul a few bags of groceries in that bed.

Re: Ford Maverick truck - 02/06/22 02:15 AM

Ford made the Pinto and the Maverick. Both were crap vehicles. They were both death traps. The Pintos exploded if hit from behind. I worked for Ohio Edison in the late 70's and they had Mavericks in their fleet and I had to drive them on occasion. Despite the bald tires Ohio Edison carefully maintained on them, and the out of wack alignment and bad brakes, they could be kept on the road if you went slow and were really careful.

One rare variant was the Maverick 'Grabber'
302cid equipped. Quick little thing. Rare. Driven one once. Surprisingly with a bit of punch , small little car with a V-8. Fun ride , nice sleeper.

Ford Maverick = Mercury Capri.
Kind of equivalent to Chevrolet Monza.
Potato potaato.

Actually I guess that the Vega is a more fair comparison.

I also bought a new Ranger. Back in early April. Just in time before everything went crazy.

A friend of mine pre ordered one a year ago and finally got his about October. Its ok I guess. He has the 4x4. I think he gave 24k for it.
It feels like a car drives like a car and has limited ground clearance.
If you only drive roads and dont need to tow or haul much it would probably work out well.

I don't know about the resulting vehicle; but I love the concept.

Get rid of all the expensive extra crap, and just pay for what you need.

I don't even think the base model has cruise control, or air conditioning.

Re: Ford Maverick truck - 02/06/22 03:20 PM

If memory serves, the original Maverick was an upscale Pinto and poor man's Mustang. First company I worked for had exactly one "company" car and it was a 2nd hand Maverick. A mid 70's model. No power steering and no AC. I drove it from St. Louis to Tulsa by way of Batesville, AR. I considered myself lucky to get out alive.

If memory serves, Ford had the market for "economy" cars covered back then. In the late 60's, we had a young single lady teacher at our small school. She had to drove about 20 miles to work. Her first car was a Ford Falcon. This time of year she would get all bundled up for her drive home. She said the car did not have a heater. That would be a cheap car.

Base Maverick Truck has A/C standard. I have cruise now but never use it. Not an issue for e

Interesting concept, I can see it being used in a number of ways.

Might work ok if not pulling grades and had some clearance. Trapped for years out of a 62 VW bug with a lift kit amazing vehicle.
