Wild hog hunting in June?

Wild hog hunting in June? - 02/13/22 01:28 PM

My son and I were planning on a bear hunt to Canada in June, but with covid and other issues we decided not to go north. We still want to go on an "Adventure" and he suggested a hog hunt down south some where. The reason its in June is we both have the first week of June scheduled for vacation and cannot change it. I know it gets a little warm in June but we could bring a freezer with us. As always on our "adventures" we have no idea where we want to go. Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana, ???????
I thought some of my trapping family down south could steer us in the right direction. Once we have a state picked out we can concentrate on licenses, rules, limits, ect. With our drive time down and back we would probably stay 3 or 4 days to hunt. Unless we are real lucky right off.
My son has started doing a little research on it, but I thought I might get some good information here. Thanks for any help.

Hogs in Texas are plentiful in the Hill country, but all private lands. I got a honey hole there. I was going to check out Mississippi on the way home this year. There is a large National wildlife area west of Jackson, name escapes me, It appears to be flood plain, but sounds like it is very open to hunters .

June is very hot in Texas. Oct-Feb is the best months. There is not many rules in Texas and no need for a License for hogs or trapping on private land.
I am not trying to discourage you only to help and let you know about the heat.

We hunt at night alot in june.alot cooler that way especially for the dogs.hog hunting in the warmer months does have its advantages.not so bad when the dogs have a big one bayed on the other side of a deep slew and you haveto swim it haha

Take lots of ice each time you go and qtr them immediately. I'm leaving for Florida in a few weeks and hope to get a few, maybe several. I have orders to let no pig walk off.... after my gobbler of course.

We know it will be hot no matter what Southern state we end up in. We can make it through, plenty of water and plenty of cool down breaks. I would be willing to trade a Hog hunt in June for a deer hunt on our property here at home in October.

It will be interesting hear what a guy from Michigan thinks of the heat in the south in June on a hog hunt. grin if it were me and had to do an outdoor adventure in June it would be some kind of fishing, either in the mountains or a lake on a boat. I hate the heat and humidity.

I get huge coolers from my local farm supply store, last week they had a pallet full of them all I wanted for free great for shipping taxi or unfinished stuff out they would be spendy if a guy had to buy them. One I’m taking to OK I did not know they made them that big.

Y’all eat them nasty things? We just caught a big boar, sow, and 5 piggies. The sow wouldn’t be half bad nor the little piggies, but if you can smell it before you get up to it, all it’s good for is pictures. That smell is how it will taste, lol!

You know, I've heard this, almost verbatim about a 1000 times.

But it doesn't even come close my experience.

We've shot half a doz big boars up to 400lbs and they were all delicious.

I eat rutting buck deer meat. Don’t all pigs smell? Except from the grocery store. Cow’s smell un-butchered. Turkey’s are stinky too. I plan to shoot and eat a hog now that I’m in the great state of Arkansas.

Are you looking for a free lance diy hunt or a guided thing? I’d get with one of the outfits in central ga (that’s what I’m familiar with, but I’m sure each state has them) that does guided thermal hunts if I was hunting in June. It’s a lot more fun than going and sitting in a stand in the heat or stalking through the swamp. I’ve never done it with one of these outfits, but have a couple buddies with thermals that I’ve gone with and had a good time.

Shot a rutting mulie once stunk bad and the meat stunk the same way it was nasty, that said I’m not looking for a State Fair hog anyway. LOL

You'll have fun. Yeah, it will be warm but it's not like you need to hunt all day. As mentioned above, Oklahoma has a ton. I welcome all to come shoot them.

We shoot probably close to a hundred a year and it doesn't even put a dent in the numbers. Most are in the fall while hunting or on the wheat driving around.

I will eat one small sow out of a hundred hogs. I leave the rest for the coyotes. Kind of like pre-baiting.

Haha, I’ll take your word for it. My experience has been 100% the opposite. 100# or under maybe, 75# or under preferred.

Are y’all looking for a DIY or guided hunt ? I know some guys that do guided hunts at night with thermal that I could put you in touch with.

Re: Wild hog hunting in June? - 02/14/22 12:26 AM

Went out to check traps about 1:30 and ran into 4. Should have grabbed a rifle to take but had been working on truck and decided to take a break.

There is no shortage of hogs around here and I'm sure any of those state you listed have plenty.

Kill as many as you can

In June I would try to find some outfitter and go on a thermal hunt, too dang hot in the daytime, another option is to bow hunt at night if you bowhunt.

Lots of public land opportunity in SE Oklahoma with lots of hogs for a DIY hunt. They will be running the river bottoms and creek bottoms in June. Only problem with public land is no baiting. Everyone hates hogs here.

Re: Wild hog hunting in June? - 02/17/22 02:51 PM

Not sure of other states but you can pretty much cross out Louisiana for June time frame. In my opinion Texas is your best bet, and they have the different species that gets massive.

All wild hogs taste great, the boars have this shield that is hardened fat that they use to charge with, along with their cutters. The charge can and will break leg bones, hip bones, not sure if anything is immune, so just be aware of that.
