Wife's cousin just got done tapping ours in the yard. Sap was steady before getting the tap in the tree. You are right the season is here, as always the question is how long

Thousands...i don't think so. Dozens, maybe.

I spend the day putting in the first dozen, setting up the first evaporator, and splitting a half cord of firewood.

Hopefully, I'll get another couple dozen maple taps in, in the next few days. Then maybe another dozen black walnut taps. When they dry up, the birch ought to be running.

A buddy of the All Purpose Boy came over and tapped some of our trees this afternoon. He's a single dad and he does stuff like syrup cooking as a project with his 2 young daughters. He pays by sharing his proceeds! I love me some tasty maple surple.

The property I trap on is tapped in now. 300,000 taps this year they hire a crew of around 20 for 2 weeks to tap in big job. Our temperatures are looking good for the next few weeks starting tomorrow. Should be a good year for them.

T-Rex. How is the black walnut syrup? I’ve heard of people making it never tried it

This will only be the second time I've harvested it. The first time yield was very low compared to the maples. The product was surprisingly similar to maple syrup, Maybe tastes a just little more smokey, or nutty or something

Holy smokes, that is 15,000 taps per person.750 taps per day over 2 weeks.
You boys know how to work.

Really slow year hear. Taps have been out 6-9 days depending upon the woods and 200 gallons from 500 trees a week ago. Corrected some holes in our lines in one woods yesterday, small run but those squirrels do a lot of chewing and if you get a hole or two you don't get much or any sap from that whole line.

I have one sugar maple tree in my yard. It's about 18" across. Could I get enough from it to make some syrup?

Re: A tapping I will go... - 03/15/22 04:17 PM

If it has a full crown the sugar content should be high. Depends on the year bit probably 1-3 qts.

Tree's about 20 years old at least.

Re: A tapping I will go... - 03/15/22 07:59 PM

We hope that today and Wednesday it will run. We have around 1,000 taps also but only 200 gallons collected to date. We had some sun and over 40 but strong winds kept the real temp down for a couple days. I have quite a bit of carryover and am glad I do as if we get a late start and when those trees bud (daylight oriented) the sap goes bitter and we are done.

Hey Zim the evaporater will produce 100 gallons of syrup an hour at full capacity. I never think too get pics when I am there but the stainless steel looks expensive lol.

Absolutely. I used to tap a single Sugar Maple in our yard as a kid. It had a very high sugar content and I would only have to reduce a couple canning kettles of sap to get a years supply of syrup.

Re: A tapping I will go... - 03/16/22 12:44 AM

If you have an average sized maple for tapping one tree with 1-2 taps probably will give you 10-15 gallons of sap. With an average sugar percentage of say 2.5 you would 3 pints or a quart and a half but it varies a lot from tree to tree and season to season.

Third season making syrup. Two batches so far here in SW WI. 25 pints on 3/7 and 30 on 3/14. Sap ran crazy yesterday and today, 300 gallons between Monday and Tuesday on 48 taps so planning to boil sap on for St Patty's Day. This year I went to all tubes because my maples are on a steep hillside.

Yip. But, remember that 10-15 gallons is for a full season, I suspect you may have lost a bit of that if you haven't tapped yet. Typically, the tree should to be a bit bigger (22-24 inch} for that second tap. So assume 10 gallons per single tap, and maybe 80% of season. That's 8 gallons= 32 quarts = 64 pints of sap. At a 40:1 sap to syrup ratio 1.6 pints of syrup. I'd do it in a stock pot over a couple concrete blocks.
