Have you been driving less ?

Have you been driving less ? - 03/13/22 05:10 PM

With the insane rise in fuel prices , I have been driving less. Still have places to go like work and other essential places , but I have curtailed other driving tasks quite a bit.

What say you ?

Nope. But I don't that much anyway. Got a couple beaver jobs to start tuesday so there will be some driving this week.

Re: Have you been driving less ? - 03/13/22 05:29 PM

Other than go to town 2 times a month, don't have a reason to go anywhere else, but the closet town is 30 miles away.

From the looks at the casino, gas prices haven't hurt the snowmobilers, yesterday over 150 trucks and trailers in the parking lot, another trailhead had over 100 couldn't get another truck-trailer in it. I would guess that most were from downstate. Gas on the rez is $4.25/ gal reg.

Re: Have you been driving less ? - 03/13/22 05:35 PM

I now plan my post office , coffee run, and parts pick ups , all in one swoop….so yes, trying to get the 12 mpg to be more efficient. Plus been brown bagging lunch for the last 2 months….no need of spending 10.00 for a small sub everyday….that saved money goes in the tank.

And I set the cruise on 64 mph or less

Re: Have you been driving less ? - 03/13/22 05:46 PM

Now that I'm retired, only reason to go out is for perishable groceries. And with free delivery, we're cutting out major monthly shopping trips too. When it gets warm, we'll travel and spend more time (weeks rather than weekends) at the lake cabin.

not cutting back on miles...yet

Re: Have you been driving less ? - 03/13/22 05:56 PM

My work place is 25 miles away. I have to drive that every day and if I get called (weekend.... after hours) out gotta drive those miles everyday also. I have cut down on my evening drives to check our farms and just see some scenery. I also cut back on checking trail cameras but only once every month or so. I can put a $100 of gas in my truck each week just doing what has to be done. Kinda sucks but that's the price I gotta pay just to keep in the game. I turn 65 in May and if gas keeps climbing it may be a factor in how long I work at a job so far away. Then again with inflation rising as fast as it is, a good paying job with great benefits is kinda hard to give up.

Re: Have you been driving less ? - 03/13/22 06:11 PM

Out west, driving distances is routine for the majority . Those in towns , who work in the same town , don't have it that bad for driving.

Supply runs, etc, are just over an hour's drive one way for me. Some are closer, but most all of them I do in one scheduled drive. I don't drive as fast as I used to, even with 70 plus hi way speed zones . I am careful about that anyway, with deer , elk and moose crossing these roads at almost any time. And the groups of wild turkeys who like to travel roads where the snow isn't deep.

I have cut back on some foods to have more cash for feeding my truck.

I have reduced my driving and I never let my tank get below 1/2 full. Wife and I are both retired and most days my car isn't used.

My friend Ryan had a deal like that going one time. He put thousands of miles each week. He got the SA card and racked up some serious points.

Re: Have you been driving less ? - 03/13/22 07:37 PM

Regardless of the price I have to buy it. I work 110 miles away and stay at my house that's 40 or so miles from work when I'm working. I stayed at moms last week it's around 12 miles from work and saves about a tank for me.

Changing jobs for something closer would be nice but the local Jobs are around 6-8$ pre hour less, have no pensions, the insurance cost more and covers less. Add in I cam Wright my check up to 80hrs a week every week if I want. I have been there nearly 16 years and it's recession proof . At best it would be a 30k a year pay cut up to 65k depending on how much ot I work.

I roughly figured between food an fuel I spend 5-6k going to work they will increase but it's a long way form the pay cut. Plus who wants to be the new guy when we are headed into a recession.

Definitely combining errands to drive less. I live 5 min from work so no biggie there. No more warming up the pickup till it’s hot inside in the morning, lol….

Re: Have you been driving less ? - 03/13/22 07:57 PM

combining trips , we did a fair amount of this any way , around town doesn't amount to much when it's a mile an a half end to end.

the wifes work health and wellness intiative has a list of thing you can do to reduce , reuse , recyle , cut energy costs , they fill out the form to get points.
they are about 20 years late on half the list and 10 years late on the rest.

getting rid of your incandescent bulbs was on the list , yup 20 years ago I did that , one mostly LED now

they get to write in things , I told her to put reduced heating oil consumption by 600 gallons buy burning wood for heat.

using boxes at the grocery store

Yes, I've been driving less. I only drive occasionally anyways, but when I do it's typically far. We have 4 vehicles and most don't get driven in any particular week. Some weeks none of our vehicles get driven at all.

No driving a Mustang GT, smoking, or weekends in NYC.
Never did those before either.
But, driving just as much as before.

Yes I don't take as many joy ride's to look things over deer watching, crop watching in season and goose scouting trips in the fall will be cut back if prices keep going higher.Glad work pays for the gas in their work trucks even though we the people are paying for it.I'm on the fence this year as for applying for a out of state hunting trip, because of the gas prices.

Re: Have you been driving less ? - 03/14/22 01:40 AM

I'm, pretty much, hosed. I drive an average of 150 miles a day for work. I get the standard mileage rate, but that is based on last year's cost estimates ,$0.585 I'm thinking break even per mile now is closer to $0.80. It's going to be a long year at this rate. Of course, once the recession kicks in, I should be traveling a lot less... cry

You know it's shameful the milage those things get. Back when I was in collage I drove a 92 Saturn SL1. It got 40mpg city 45 highway, without having to do all the hybrid crap. If they were capable of that back then just imagine what they should be able to do today with technological advancements. But all they have advanced is the price of the vehicles the mpg at best has been stagnate, to me it seems to have actually declined.
