What's a ramp? Other than a loading dock.

Re: Started selling ramps today. - 03/21/22 07:40 PM

Cathryn, I have thought over the possibility of selling Ramps(we always called them Leeks) here, but am not sure how I would approach it...... I have access to thousands of them on a family member's land, so a ready supply is guaranteed. I guess my questions to you are how much do you ask for them? Do you sell per dozen, per clump? Cleaned or not cleaned? It has become VERY cool here the last 4-5 years to forage, and Ramps are very popular, so much so, that there is now a real push to only pick a leaf off each plant, and if you dig up the bulbs you are taken to task by any number of keyboard warriors that will tell you your a real ! that cares nothing about the environment, sustainability, or Mom's apple pies! I have been doing this since I was a child, as did my folks and their folks before them. I am not about to wipe out my own Ramp patch for profit, and considering I am the only one in the entire family that will eat the darn things, I'm sure my spot is safe from the Wandering Hoards. We are not allowed to pick them on public lands in Michigan, even just for our own use. Most folks ignore that rule totally though. Also, do you have a good recipe for Ramps served over kitten?

All kidding aside, if you want to answer but would rather answer via PM, I understand. I understand if you'd rather not answer as well.

No offence but those thangs will clear a room. I have no clue who was the first or why anyone would eat one. First person must have been on a dare.

Aww now, they aint all that bad. smile
I like em', but they're sort of like a seasonal novelty, and a bit over priced. There are local festivals and everything !
Like morels, some go nuts over them. We get a bushel or more most years, give em to friends.

I had my very first ones ever last spring as Cathryn sent me some. I thought they were great! If you don't like ramps then you don't like any of the alliums I suppose.

What's more, I admire anybody that makes a go of living off the land. Cathryn and Jerry epitomize the spirit of making your living from natures bounty.

Nothing better than , chicken and leek soup.

Re: Started selling ramps today. - 03/22/22 11:31 AM

Maybe potato and leek soup. I grew up in Central NY and had access to as many as I wanted to dig.

Only a few places to find them in the county I live in here.

Ramps are a.cross between garlic and onions.

They look similiat to a wild onion.

We sell them 2 ways.

3.00 a dozen..which is what we did yesterday..or by the pound.

We also sell them by the pound wholesale to a guy in WV and one n Texas.

We are delivering some today to Romney wv. The guy is paying our gas too.

Last year in 3 or 4 weeks we made over 8500.00

We are hoping to make 15 this year.

We don't eat them.

Its crazy how many people do

The best tasting ruffed grouse last year was wrapped up in some leaves and baked.
Moist and just a hint of the taste.
Try it and you will pass up the bacon wrapping next time, for sure.

Since the season is so short,,you should consider pickling a bunch of them to sell.Pickled leeks are great.Unless your already too busy keeping up with your demand as it is.Just a thought.

Re: Started selling ramps today. - 03/22/22 12:42 PM

Depends on size.

Usually 3 dozen to the pound.

The ones right now are small. 12 dozen to the pound...yes that is 36.00 a pound right now.

We make more money selling them by the dozen but there's more work involved because we clean the ones Russel by the dozen.

The ones by the pound we just shake the dirt off of them
Basically they're bare rooted when we sell them.

Bash ally dig and sell

Re: Started selling ramps today. - 03/22/22 12:47 PM

That looks like a good price.
Bought some last year $9 a "bundle" dirty. Over a doz, but under a lb. (est) not sure.
Thanks !

This is a pic of what we have now.

They're small we know.. but some people like them small.

Ive seen them priced higher than we sell them but we want to sell more volume so qe sell them for a little leaa amd we take pride in our quality

Weve seem some that are not very good quality for sale.

The people that buy from us always comment on the quality of our product in comparison to other ramps they've seen being sold.

This is a pic of what we have today

The rule for eating leeks is, no one eats leeks unless everyone eats leeks!

Re: Started selling ramps today. - 03/22/22 01:32 PM

Lol.

A guy we sold some too yesterday came by this morning and picked up the 2 kittens he wanted and told me he was able to walk with put his cane this morning..the first time since last spring

I kinda chuckled
.he said in serious..they help my joints.

I told him thank you for taking the kittens and I gave him a bag of ramps on the house.

He said ..are you sure.....

I said absolutely..i appreciate that you're giving two kittens a home.and I hoped they did help his joints.

I give a few away good to develop a good relationship with your customers.

It keeps them coming back and they will tell their friends and in the end..you'll sell more ramps and make more money and develop a good reputation.

How much land do you have planted , to get that much in sales ?
Posted By: cathryn

Re: Started selling ramps today. - 03/22/22 02:08 PM

Jerry has several planted on his 140 acre farm and we have some big private land owners that we've developed relationships with over the years that allow us dig on their property...they have literally acres of them

And this year we have subcontracted to other diggers so that we can supply our market because he can't dig that many himself and I have regular job this year so I can't go as much

We pay cash daily to those guys and. We aren't afraid to travel to get them

If anyone's interested in digging ramps pm me.

Jerry dug 265 lbs in 5 hours by himself..best hes ever done. It came to 230 an hour.

The other day he made 118 an hour..354.00 for 3 hrs work
Posted By: cathryn

Re: Started selling ramps today. - 03/22/22 08:37 PM

We dropped off the ramps at the buyer.

Jerry dug 3 hours and we sold 52 dozen along the road and 85 lbs to the bulk buyer.. For a total of 561.00 for 3 hrs work digging.

I'm beginning to truly love ramps.

Re: Started selling ramps today. - 03/22/22 11:14 PM

I think it's great how much money you make digging and selling ramps!!
The part that amazes me is people buy them because around here they grow all over the place.
Many spots are 3 to five acres. Some as far as the eye can see
Got snow coming again Sunday through Tuesday so ramps are a few weeks off yet.
Going to dig some horse radish this week.
