Underground Dog Fence - 03/25/22 01:20 AM

Looking to invest in an underground buried wire system for our labs due to change in neighbors. We tried a wireless unit and in the wooded area that we live, it was not satisfactory.

What brand systems have you had luck with (underground that is)?

Looking for ideas how to trench it in through tree roots, etc. I used a Janick trencher to do one around a decade ago at our old house, but they no longer rent out a unit. Shoot me some ideas if you have any, or other tools that have worked. 14 gauge solid wire, 4-6” deep. Roughly 1000 feet (one acre).

Don't know about the best fence, but for places where there aren't any tree roots try using a pressure washer if you have one. Use the pinpoint tip and it will cut a narrow trench perfect for laying wire in. Cut the grass short, make the trench, and lay the wire. You'll barely notice it after a few grass cuttings.

I've used a chain saw to cut a trench for hiding TV dish wire and for burying UF wire for lights... and did help my brother run his wire for his dog wireless fence. The chain gets gummed up so I kept a bucket of water to run my chain and bar in the water to clean it and then go again till it gums up again. I used an old chain and bar. Trenched over 100 feet several times. Put the wire for the dish TV about a foot deep. I seen on the webb they do make a saw with a special chain for doing this...... but it was close to a $1000. Not exactly what a saw is made for........... but it worked !

I put in the Extreme Dog Fence a few years ago, they’ve got a couple different options for grades of wire, i went with the thickest wire and the heavy coating. I trenched in 3 acres and would hate to have a wire break after all that work. It has worked flawlessly. As far as the roots i’m not sure. You can also just stake it to ground, that may be an option in some spots with heavy roots.

My neighbors have a wireless system that they take along when they go out of town. They have two energetic terriors and I don't recall them ever getting out.

We put in '''pet safe''' brand and have had no problems with it. Our dog won't even consider crossing it.

Have looked into the GPS ones that don’t require digging and burying anything?

We have a Yard Max from petsafe. Very happy with it.
I like that it has an infinite boundary beyond the perimeter. Some products will react a few feet to either side of the buried line but I read that some dogs have learned to leap the barrier without consequence.
A friend who had recently gotten a power lawn edger helped put it in, he was eager to play with the new tool and volunteered. With an edger, ours isn't 4-6" deep - it doesn't need to be.
We weren't fighting with tree roots but gravel packed into the edge of the lawn where lawn and alley, lawn and street meet.

I have 2 dachshunds which are a very stubborn breed. My female likes to explore and my male will go right along with her. If she is tied up, he will not go very far. With the invisible fence, neither one of them are interested in going anywhere near the wire.

Sounds like it should do the job to keep our labs in the yard. I’ve got a couple ideas on how to trench it in. Something will work.

Thanks for the feedback!
