I think the Naps were so that the Teacher could slip into the Coat Room for a quick hit from the Flask in her pocket.
She most likely would have either killed a kid or her self if not self medicated.

Never had that experience. We did not have kindergarten until I was starting HS in 1962. I know our son enjoyed taking those "fake naps". Hard t be still and quite when you are not tired.

When I was that age, I don't think there was a thing called kindergarten. Just 1st grade at the age of 6. No naps that I remember.

I remember going home with the dreaded note pined to my shirt from a KG nap time event.
As the second youngest of 6 boys I over heard my older brothers talking about somebody seeing a girls underwear at a movie or something. So during nap time, I flipped my carpet sample nap mat over, fuzzy side down, so I could scooch around with my toes and try to peek upbgirls dresses and see what all the hubbub was about. The teacher saw me and sent me home with a note pinned on my shirt for my mom to call her. Wow! That was the first time I ever saw my mom that mad, at me anyway. The ol ping pong paddle got a work out that night!!!

Yep, half the time I think the teacher just wanted some quiet time so that’s when nap time was.

We couldn't afford mats, we just put our heads down on the desks...

Re: School Naptime - 03/31/22 06:43 PM
I went to Montessori School starting at age 3 and instead of Kindergarten. Kids that were there until their parents got off work took naps. Kids whose parents picked them up at 3:00pm didn't. I remember the red and blue mats. I only had to take a nap once, when my regular teacher didn't show up and they put us with the other kids.

We had to bring a rug from home.

Re: School Naptime - 03/31/22 10:40 PM
All I had was a big green bath towel to lay on. I really don't think I ever actually slept, though.
Now it is a different story...

Still remember the plastic smell of the mats. Our preschool was in the basement of the town hall which was also the local gun clubs indoor pistol range. All of that lead exposure might explain some of the dumb things my buddies and did???

When my dad passef, mom moved from my childhood home to an apartment. She brought me my naptime blanket which she had sewn for me. Been 50 years since I used it. Maybe I'll give it to my grandson....

If we caused any mischief our teacher made us stand holding a large book out at arms length. You could really begin to feel it after a few minutes.

Re: School Naptime - 04/01/22 07:40 PM
More then once I got rapped across the knuckles with one of the pointers. A teacher threw a book at me for talking In class. I ducked and it hit the girl behind me and knocked her out of her chair. The god old days.
Totally remember the blue/red mats. Don't remember much else in KG. Maybe we were all invited to a girl classmate bday party and I didn't want to go to a girls bday party!
Memories of smacks, slaps, duct tape are all from higher grades, junior high!
