Birds in the yard - 04/08/22 02:38 AM

I see the chickadees every day and the cedar waxwings a few times a week. The ruby-crowned kinglet was a first for me. I also included one of my momma hens. Her chicks are about a week old now.

What type of camera gear are you using? Do you touch up your photos at all afterwards? Adjusting contrast ect...

My camera is a Pentax K5iis and the lens depends on the subject. For birds I use the Pentax DA* 300, for smaller things like bugs I use the Pentax 100mm macro. I almost always crop the photos, sometimes quite a lot. I can never get as close as I'd like. I will also brighten them or add some contrast. I never could get the hang of editing beyond the basics. Here are the same photos straight out of the camera for comparison. You can see they are all cropped quite significantly and brightened, especially the ruby-crowned kinglet.

It is spring at last, and I'm glad to have it. I've never had luck with morels, never have found one. I don't really go anywhere besides my own property though, so I may do better to try somewhere else. We've been getting some rain so they should be popping up.

That is a nice compliment, thank you! If you subscribe to Trappers World and have the March/April 2019 issue, that is my picture of a bobcat on the cover.

Very nice pictures Kayleigh, I also really like the hen and chick photo, the way they are looking at each other. I had chickadees helping me skin skunks this winter. They love skunk fat and couldn't wait till I was done with the process, eating while I was working. Keep up the great work !

Being new here, I don't know if you are familiar with his work. I think Wolfdog 97 has his posts archived.

Very nice pictures Kayleigh. Great to see the work of a fellow birder smile We have bohemian waxwings instead of cedar waxwings here. They are fun to photograph in the spring, when they get drunk from eating fermented crab apples or cranberries. Our chickadees are very similar, and they have also been helping me with cleaning a mink skeleton this winter.

Re: Birds in the yard - 04/09/22 03:08 PM

I was so focused on the birds in your pics that I didn't notice the chickadee was standing on a jawbone until you showed the full pic. The pic of the hen and it's chick would make a nice Mother's Day card. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for posting these beautiful pictures. I am most impressed with the Ruby-crowned Kinglet. They are so small and mobile, I'm sure they're hard to photograph.

Re: Birds in the yard - 04/09/22 11:29 PM

Nice to see the wax wing. I love those little chickadees. They come to our feeder during the very cold weather and don't see much of them late winter. I was ready to shoot the grey squirrel a few weeks ago but he is pretty good about keeping the grackles away to I am giving him some time at the feeder too.
