Mississippians: Ad Valorem Taxes - 04/14/22 12:48 AM

On your Property Tax bill , what exactly do they consider Ad Valorem Taxes ? I was reading something about the Property Tax exemptions in that State, and they exempt the first $7500 in Assessed Value, but then they say that if you are disabled, you could qualify for a total exemption from all Ad Valorem taxes

Question:

Say you get the exemption of $7,500 and let's say for example, you Tax bill is $900 . If you get the additional exemption from all Ad Valorem taxes, what would that bring your Property tax bill down to ?

It is a tax based on a percentage of the value of the asset being taxed or property etc. Sales tax is also a form of Ad Valorem taxes as it is based on a percentage of the item sold etc. Property taxes are also Ad Valorem tax but they are done annually or some other reoccurring time frame and not once. As to exemptions and reductions I would not know anything about exemptions or reducing tax etc.

When you turn 65, you are exempt from taxes on the first $80,000 of the value of your home/land. I believe it's the same for disabled but don't quote me on that.

The $75,000 exemption is what's called a homestead exemption. You must live in a dwelling on that parcel and if you apply this year your exemption starts next year and every year after that. I don't know about totally disabled but I am 100% V A and I am totally exempt. I think it is the same for other 100% disabled folks. I know advalorem taxes go to schools and roads but I'm sure they go to other things as well.
