Looking good William, the back pile will have less end checking because the stickers are closer to the end, spruce is tough to saw, if he can saw spruce straight he can saw anything.

Sugerplum trees are only about 10 feet high and brushy like hazel brush have a beery like a blueberry when ripe but pinkish purple when ripe. I have never seen a tree this big. If I hadn't been brushing with a saw probably would have run it over with the skidder and not though about it.

Nice lumber.
I thought sugar plums were small shrubs.

Re: Finally 2 inch wood - 04/21/22 12:06 AM

Boco I have seen 20 inch mountain ash in my area on the lake shore surprised me at the time but made some beautiful lumber but never would have dreamed of a sugerplum tree this size maybe a record I haven't looked it up yet.

Re: Finally 2 inch wood - 04/21/22 12:00 PM

The mill is a 96 but works great. Myself and a good friend picked it up a few years ago for 12k talking with woodmizer the other day they said a order today would have a 4th quarter of 2023 delivery. That mill is about 55k new today.

Looking up the information on the service berry tree said they grow up to about 35 feet so I think this one is tall at around 60 feet.

I think what you are describing is actually Amelanchier, aka, serviceberry, shadbush, juneberry, etc.. Have a berry similar to a blueberry and many people make pies with them.

North 50 those are stickers in the back. That pile of wood will be ready to use in middle of June. Logs where cut a year ago so they are pretty dry now. Need to get it cut in the next 2 weeks before it warms up and the bugs get active.

Re: Finally 2 inch wood - 04/22/22 02:03 AM

Didn't get a hol lot done today with the rain last night and the safternoon but I figured about 3k board ft yesterday and today so about 10 days and should be done. If everyone's back holds out.

Re: Finally 2 inch wood - 04/22/22 02:10 AM

Chuck our 16 ft 2x6 are around 28 dollars a piece so I am happy to have a mill and be able to make it myself. And the logs were a little bonus from the company I work for so time and blades and gas and I will probably get about 8k worth of wood after I get it milled.

Re: Finally 2 inch wood - 04/22/22 02:10 AM

Very nice! Do you have it all sold?
Posted By: sweetwilliam

Re: Finally 2 inch wood - 04/22/22 02:15 AM

You can't get the quality of wood in a store that you can mill yourself if you have a good noledge of sawing lumber. I always payed attention to the people I worked with in the past and it has payed off in my life.

Re: Finally 2 inch wood - 04/22/22 02:27 AM

No I have a bit of 1x8 to go to my boss for board and batten and need to finish up the camp. I am going to build a couple of smaller camps on my property over the next couple of years to help with my income in the future as I can rent them out by the week in the summer for good money. Just finish up 4k ft of 1x6 ceader for tg should be able to dress it in July as the logs have been cut for about 10 years the color is nice in aged white ceader as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Finally 2 inch wood - 05/07/22 03:55 AM

So is it better to cut dry logs into studs or cut green and dry after cutting?i would imagine there would be more problems with the lumber warping if cut from green logs and dried later?
also is it harder on the blades/mill cutting dry wood as opposed to green?

Real nice bunch of lumber there, and a lot of work.

Re: Finally 2 inch wood - 05/07/22 07:11 AM

most trees have some sort of tension in them from the growing process. So dry or green once sawn into lumber , dependent on how much tension is in the log, some of that tension is released and that is what cause some lumber to warp more than others. Plus a log you think is dry, never really is 100% dry.

Re: Finally 2 inch wood - 05/07/22 11:38 AM

Boco dry spruce is hard to saw especially the nots. As squash said timber bind is always in logs but can be released by sawing if you are watching for it in the sawing process. I will try and get a few pictures today to show the amount of bend when sawing. This stuff has been pretty good so far only had one bad log that was junk. The 16 ft 2x6 looked like a recurve bow lol.

Re: Finally 2 inch wood - 05/08/22 12:26 AM

Took a few pics of the movement of the wood when sawing. This is how much they moved on their own. [Linked Image]

First one is end of cant where it moved, second is the other end and the 3 is a cant that is straight after sawing.

Re: Finally 2 inch wood - 05/08/22 01:55 AM

Beautiful looking table GB.
So the reason the boards dont line up is because of the stress released when sawn SW?

Re: Finally 2 inch wood - 05/08/22 02:44 AM

I'm sure that's it.....yeah.
Posted By: sweetwilliam

Re: Finally 2 inch wood - 05/08/22 11:38 AM

That is correct boco that's where they went to as the saw was cutting usually starts too move when you are about a foot down the log with the cut. Other times it is vertical movement. Sometimes it will jam the saw if the pressure is forcing down into the log. Cool to see how wood moves in the sawing process.

A little bend in this one.

Re: Finally 2 inch wood - 05/11/22 02:02 AM

Should put more spacers between the wood, the cedar is good as spacers for spruce. Never use the same species as spacers due to mold between the wood if the same.
OHIO
only handle it once
place on a pallet to move then strap down
Good work
