The Eastern Roman Empire. Circa 500AD the empire had gotten so large that it was effectively divided with co-emporers east and west. Constantine established his eastern capital at Byzantium aka Constantinople aka Istanbul today.

While the western half fell shortly after the eastern half survived well into the modern age finally falling to the Ottoman Turks shortly before Columbus headed west.

BTW, while the language of Byzantium was Greek and retained a largely Greek culture they referred to themselves as Romans to the very end.

This is also where we get the Great Schism between the Eastern Patriarchs and the Pope in Rome. Hence Orthodox and Roman Catholics today.
