.17 Hmr “scope?” - 05/04/22 10:26 PM

Looking for a good scope for my .17 Hmr. Any owners have a recommendation for a good scope for a 17 Hmr?

I have a 3 x 9 Bushnell Sportsman 40mm with adjustable objective sitting on my Savage. Bought it and the gun about 10 years ago. Scope was less than $100. I think it had a model number but that is hidden under one of the rings and I do not have the box. Mounted it, sighted it in and have not touched it since. The most accurate gun/scope combo I have ever owned.

For a. 17HM,R, just get a low powered scope. They are a 150 gun max. No need to go over 6x.
Look at Vortex,bushnell,Redfield.
And for God's sake, don't get one with all the clutter!

I started with a Nikon 3x9 40 rimfire on my savage 17. I then switched over to a Leupold 4x12 40. I preferred the Nikon over the Leupold....I wish they hadnt stopped production on their line of scopes.

Leupold are good scope and come with a lifetime warranty. Pick what you want? I have shot a 22 magnum with a 3x9 and it was great on small ground squirrels at 100ish yards. 17 hmr. Will shoot a little farther. Good Luck

Re: .17 Hmr “scope?” - 05/05/22 01:56 AM

I have a 3-9 Leupold on my Ruger 17HMR. I would tell how accurate, and how far I can hit what I'm aiming at, but would risk being called a braggart or a liar. That little pill, with a good scope does some amazing things which I will also refrain from sharing.
Whatever scope I choose is strongly based on how it performs in low light. Leupold scopes do not suffer from glare in low light like a lot of other scopes do. It is hard to test low light performance at the gun shop. You have to go by experience or from someone with experience.

I read QBD's answer above and my experience is the same with a savage .17, it's super accurate. However I went and looked and it has a Simmons 3x9x40 8 point scope on it.

I’m also a fan of Leupold. As already mentioned, clarity during low light makes a huge difference. My .17 is my go to yard gun and I rarely shoot past 125 yards. Yet I’ve got a 4x12 on it…aim small, miss small.

Vortex Crossfire 2-7x32 is all I need on my Savage A17. I don't shoot paper though, just critters I want to kill and it is great for that.

I got a cheap BSA sweet 17 on mine. It’s incredible how accurate it is and I use and abuse the thing.

2-7x32 vortex cause 17hmr just doesn't shoot that far to need more magnification

sight in leave it on 2x 95% of the time

edit :just read your post above mine , Leopold is good.

I have gone to less magnification unless I plan to be shooting past 300 yards

No regrets with a Leupold.
I have not considered any other brand for about 40 years.
Like a guy said very well above - no details because it would sound like bragging.

Re: .17 Hmr “scope?” - 05/18/22 04:17 AM

My wife bought me a savage bolt action topped with a Cabela's caliper specific 3x9. I killed 18 coyotes out of my feeding tractor this winter with it. It rode around behind the seat all winter and bounced and banged around and still shoots. They will reach out farther than folks think. No bang flops unless you hit them in the spine. I spined one at 300 and piled it up. They get pretty acrobatic when you run that little pill in them.

Re: .17 Hmr “scope?” - 05/18/22 10:41 PM

After reading this, I was reminded of the great deal I got on a Leupold Vari X III, 3.5-10 X at an estate sale a couple years ago. When I picked it up and saw the $125.00 price tag on it, I could not let it go. I had to buy a new rifle to put it on then, so it wound up costing me a little more money once I bought the Ruger Model 77 in .17 Winchester Super Mag.

Great find on the scope and nice rifle choice. I have it’s twin sister tho the little Savage I bought first in that caliber gets lugged/tossed around doing the heavy duty. Some rifles are just to pretty for what I put them thru.

MnMan and Osky - that is one of the few guns remaining that I would like to buy. It is a very interesting cartridge and the rifle looks like Ruger used their nicest materials.
Have you experienced any troubles as complained of early on?

Have a Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14 with Ballistic Plex on my shooter 5mm Rem Mag.

The dots on the vertical are indispensable.

And my friend the gunsmith…bedded the barrel too…taking all the measures for accuracy….now I have to do my part.

Re: .17 Hmr “scope?” - 05/19/22 02:04 PM

Vortex Crossfire 2-7x32 on my Savage A17. I used the medium high mounts.

I shot at a coyote the other day. About 140-150 yards. I sure I hit it. Watched it grab at it shoulder. I check and couldn't find it.

I have the Savage bolt. Poorest magazine as any made. Not a solid locking in. It shoots ok. Just jams rounds at times.

No complaints here, but I have looked at it more than I have shot it. I did call in one fox and shot it with the Ruger. I got such a good deal on that scope that I had to buy an interesting gun to put it on. I think Osky has shot his more.
