Got dad a turkey

Got dad a turkey - 05/08/22 06:57 PM

Dads hip has been hurting more and more, he is not able to hunt where we usually do because of the terrain. I found a place that was easy to walk in to about a half hour from home. He came up to spend the weekend. Saturday morning we were out, weather was great. Didn't hear any gobbling at all though. Saw a few deer and 3 hens about 630. Watched them for a while, then nothing. About 720, two jakes appear about 70 yards down the tree line. They angled out into the field a bit, then came straight to our hen decoy. Dad had to wait til they were only 15 yards away, they were too close to each other. This is dad's first bird in a few years, he was real happy. It felt great to put my dad on a bird, he has put me on many in the past.

Only had 1 tag. The second did stick around a bit, then ran off. It would have been an easy shot take them both together, if we'd have had a tag.

I sure do Ridge. He's 75 now, I know any hunt might be his last.

Good job Kyle. I hunted in central near Gerber Lakes the 2nd season. I got a nice tom the 2nd day. I had 3 jakes close to me the first morning but they never separated so I let them pass through. I had 3 jakes and 5 hens the first day. The 2nd day I had 4 bigger toms cross about 80 yards out and pass on. A few minutes later two toms came out and came to my hen decoy. Never heard a sound out of any of those 9 males and very little from the hens.
That was the most males I had around me in a couple days in several seasons.

Yeah buddy! That’s what it’s about…making memories! Reciprocating the favor when you get the chance! I’ve carried kids through beaver swamps to head off gobblers…not that I expect to be carried, but if they put me on gobblers when I can’t get around would make it full circle!

Nope, just an 870. The smoothies won't fit in a blind, and he can't sit on the ground anymore.

Re: Got dad a turkey - 05/09/22 11:23 AM

Thanks, guys. He was real happy with how it turned out.

He said he could get used to "guided" hunts. I had the turkey cleaned, wrapped and in the freezer and a late breakfast on the table for him by 10.
