Uses for messed up wood

So I'm allowed to cull ( remove it from the main stock and prep it to be resold as damaged at a marked down price )bad wood here with my new position in the lumber department. I've been going through about every bunk of wood and culling anything that doesn't look like something I'd buy or I'm 90% sure a customer wouldn't pay full price for.
Most of the time the customers will just chuk bad wood all over the place during the day and it just makes a big mess not to mention there's people asking for discounts on messe up boards all day long so it make life easier to just get rid of it now. Here's one pile I'm about to make I to a pack so real beauties in this lol. What would y'all do with something like these ? Other the fire wood that is lol.

Our local store puts them in a pile at 50% off and they sell quick. I've bought them and used them on tree stands and blinds.

Same we do with ours. All cull packs start out @50% off. All the small board are all gone by the time I get here at night. Longer stuff seems to stick around for a bit though lol

I would have guessed that a company that big had some sort of quality assurance standards for lumber and only accepted deliveries that met those standards or had some sort of charge back arrangement with penalties if they received wood that didn't meet the standards in the contract. Just assumed that if you wanted to sell to the big boys, you needed to do that culling at the mill. That's a lot of extra labor cost for the retailer having to cull through each bundle.

Back when I was contracting, I would have framing lumber delivered to the worksite by a local lumberyard. I had them come back to pick up everything on on a job twice because the lumber was junk. They stopped sending me junk.

Of course, what was considered junk then is prime #1 today.

Honestly most of the time it's the customers doing. The culling it seem. Most part they just put the bunk in the rack cut the straps and that's it. Cont though when their free time though the day and collect all the stuff that was tossed out in the ground or obviously bad....it that's how it's supposed to happen honestly I can't stand seeing the same mangled up picked of wood in one of my bunk every day for a week so when I flat stacking mess up stacks I just cull as I go. Warped wood generally don't stack good lol. Will say though was clicking out the other day a little bit after the store opened and had a guy stop me and said ever since he saw me walking out every morning the wood quality has gotten better

I dont know how much time you have to improve your lumber. Could you have a rack with shorter cuttings. Most hobby projects could use , shorter lengths. cut the crappy parts out. Might surprise you , how much you sell. But might not work in a high volume store. old243

I make a lot of target stands for the range and 4-H shooting from them

our steel sits on sacrificial 2x4 posts they get shot a lot more than I would like

lots of times if you can get 3 relatively strait feet out of them you can make very sturdy saw horses if a leg has a touch of a twist not a huge deal

They don't separate crap lumber here, heck, they can't get anyone to work period.

You have to sort through the junk thats laying on top, thats been sorted through 50 times already. If your lucky, you can burrow down to some better wood, or cut the straps on a new pile and check your luck.

I use scraps like this to build muskrat/mink beams

A mill should not even send that crap out to stores.
All that wood missing means " strength " is missing.

yup usually the long stuff still sitting there when I get there 10 feet and longer

I keep a battery powered crculat saw and a hand saw in my truck but I have several times loaded up a cart and asked nicely if the would cut it on the big radial arm saw and they alwasy have sometimes I have to wait a few minutes I mark cuts and they just cut on my mark

I have filled several ofthe shopping carts with 2 foot and 18 inch peices

a H target stand if two 24 inch pieces two 18 inch pieces and one 14 inch 1x4

on this one the cross pieces are 16" and the long pieces are 28"

I typically do 18 and 24 because a USPSA target is 18 inches wide and 24 is typically enough to keep it from blowing over but I had the wood I had and it has been windy lately

these the uprights are salvaged pallet wood as is the middle piece. I typically use 1x2 furring strips . technically a USPSA target needs to be 5 foot high at the shoulder but 8 foot furring strips cut in half , I practice with 4 foot at the shoulders to save cost.

I call them target stands but they could just as easily be yard sale sing stands

the other reason for 18 and 24 inch is that it comes to 7 feet so when I was buying new cheap studs to make these a pre cut stud that was less expensive than a 8 foot 2x4 made one with very little left over

some people make them 24 wide and use an 8 foot 2x4

you can get away with 6 screws

they will inevitably get shot , by who I don't know but it happens everything down range gets shot eventually.

I built my whole chicken coop, 8x8x8 house with a 15x15x6 run out of junk lumber like that. Maybe it’s not real pretty, but it was free and it keeps chickens contained and the weather off em. Ive built lots of things out of junk lumber like that which don’t need to be pretty or support a lot of weight.

Cut them into stakes for the concrete contractors . ..sell by the bundle

Use them to make bird houses, wood duck boxes, carpenter bee traps, etc. and sell them at the flea market.

Time is money and sorting through crap lumber costs money.

You are making me jealous, Wolfdog91. There has been a ton of suggestions given. So do with it whatever you desire.

It's been close to a year since I looked at my local Lowe's framing lumber. It looked fine to me other than some forklift damage. Sheet goods were a different story.

And they're paying me to make lumber look good so what can I say

I buy them! When I do a project or build something every project has short cut pieces. When I need a short piece, I go to my cull wood pile.
