When filming with a GoPro, what is the optimum videoing format?

I'm filming currently in 1080. It will give me about 10 minutes of video. Then stop for about 10 minutes. Then restart about 10 minutes later and film for about 10 minutes, etc etc.

Is this a design by them so that you're not getting 2 hours of straight video? Or am I doing something wrong?

I filmed a bike ride yesterday. Once I started the video I never touched it for over an hour.

It gave me 4 videos between 8-10 minutes long. I'm going out west later this year and want to get longer videos.

Would downsizing the resolution give me longer videos?

I do like the quality in 1080.

My SD card is more than capable of filming at least 2 hours of video.

I use mine at that setting on my old one and a newer Hero 9 black, have never had that issue. Must be a setting in your setup.

The SD card could be a issue. I’d give them a call, I’m sure they’ve probably seen the problem before

It had a limit of 10 minutes set on the video. I changed that to "no limit".

I'm still not sure why it would start recording again after so long. But if it works and gets more longer video times I'll be good with it.

What I did get is great though.

I still have time to play with it and figure more out.

My Hero 6 would look like you were looking through a fish eye lens. It was horrible. The Hero 9 Black is of much better quality.

elkaholic, are you finding that the front screen lags a bit while recording? I'm looking into the Hero 9 and 10 for an upcoming backpacking trip, and that was one of the cons of the 9 that I read about.

I never really looked at the front screen. I've only used it a couple times on my bike. It does eat batteries like an "I beat anorexia" group at an all you can eat buffet.

As for the 9 or 10 go to Youtube and look at videos shot by both, then decide. I went with the 9 because of my budget. On my bike it gives you little bit of screen blur on the side at about 40 mph and above. I'm not concerned. I just want what's in front of me. And I honestly didn't notice it until my son pointed it out to me. I wouldn't hesitate to get another one if it takes a crap, or I lose.... er er er misplace it like I'm prone to do.

Ohhhh yeah I figured out my stupid problem, and I'm kind of embarrassed.

It breaks the videos down into smaller increments. The whole thing is there. It just doesn't come up as 1 continuous video. I guess it's done this way to keep your download time more manageable. Why I thought it was shutting down for 10 minutes was because I wasn't watching them in order. It overlaps the videos by about 3-5 seconds so you get the whole thing.

My ride yesterday was over 1.5 hours. It broke it down to 7 or 8 shorter videos.
