Biggest Bluegill best fishing Lake - 05/19/22 02:15 AM

In reading the Smallie fishing thread I have been trying to get on some Big Bluegills with my Wife

We have had motor issues with our 70 hp. Johnson so We're limited to our Canoe.

But easier to launch in a good spot. My Wife has made it through a heart attack a few weeks ago...and after actually going back to work as a Nurse she caught Covid a Second time.
Really want to get her fishing.

I dont know how far you wanna drive but ive been wanting to go to the sandhills in nebraska near Valentine to hit some of those little ponds that hold giant gills. I would think a canoe would be perfect on those. I used to drive from Valentine to North Platte and man thats some open, scenic country. Saw a few yotes down there too.

My wife has me cleaning jumbo crappie two to three nights a week. Since second week of May. I noted the bluegills are showing up in her fish basket, nice eaters about 9 or so inches. The crappie average 12 to 14 inch. We haven't put a boat in the water yet since ice out, all fish caught from shore or our dock. I got my flyrod and poppers out, next three weeks should be good gilling!

If Big Stone is not to far I believe that you could find some real nice sunfish. With your canoe you would want to launch from the South Dakota side at the rearing ponds access and fish near the islands for protection from the wind. Your MN licenses are all you need to do that.

Bluegills should be on the beds this week of next as the lilacs are in bloom here. I know you are a bit farther north but any lake that holds 'gills should produce the biggest of the year from the beds.

I know it's not much help but figured I'd offer some encouragement anyhow lol

Oh and I don't like worms or crawlers for gills but prefer waxies. Those usually will out fish worms 3 to one in the open water.

Dad 82 and I tried to hit Cross and Pokegama snake river section but all the ramps are 6 to 8 feet under.
I prefer an inland lake. DAD Likes those spots for some reason.

My Wife is still recovering

gills are all over and I wouldn't worry to much about making a destination trip of it

we had good luck on the Mississippi pool 7 Minnesota side under the docks and boat lifts and other structure some of that you could even access from shore but for sure from canoe you can access the spill way from the down river side of L&D6 Minnesota side

I have heard good things about Crappie on pool 9 we got into them on pool 6 for a few days till it got too high a water temp and they shut off.

honestly it was so hot that week we didn't keep any of the bigger ones a few little ones for catfish bait, we were camping and the last thing I wanted to do when we got done fishing after dark was clean fish and sit over a hot pan.

catch a sandwich and sleep so we could get up and fish again at sunrise before it got to hot. the heat of the day we would drive into Lacrosse and catch a Chinese buffet at lunch prices in the air conditioning and eat our selves stuffed.

it didn't occur to me not to eat them if it wasn't in the 90s and we weren't fishing all day I would have.

we were catching the tail of the spawn we came back the next week and the water level had fallen around 16 inches and it was not the same.

there were good size but not record setters

early spawn is likely better
