Just a little powder horn work

Just a little powder horn work - 05/23/22 12:29 PM

I got the neck of the horn dyed this weekend. I usually used RIT dye, but the color wasn't coming out good at all, so I switched to leather dye. Color looks good to me. The dye goes past the neck onto the body, so that is cleaned up with a little scraping. Now the engraving can start.

Fiebings Pro Dye is what I use. There's a way to keep it from rubbing off but I can't remember what it is at the moment.

That's what I ended up using. If you remember what to seal it with, please let me know.

You might ask Tim over on ALR... Seems that's where I remember reading about it.

Thanks Mike. Looks like heat to set and a coat of wax afterwards might be the ticket.

Different dyes for different materials. Horn is protein, leather and hair are protein. Wool is protein. Cotton and linen are vegetable. Ritt is for vegatable fiber. Use a dye for protein. Hair dye works well on horn too.
