6.8 Caliber

6.8 Caliber - 05/23/22 07:59 PM

My son in law showed me a new rifle he bought, a 6.8 caliber. I'd never heard of it before. He already has a 6.5 Creedmor. What's the difference? He said the 6.8 will make a better elk rifle.
The 6.8 cartridges certainly look more formidable. When did this caliber come out?

6.8mm is .277 caliber... the 270 Winchester shares this bullet diameter. His is probably the "new" 6.8 Western., based on one of the short magnum cases.

there are a bunch of 6.8 that cam our recently if he says good elk rifle and you say more formattable than a 6.5 Creedmoor then he is most likely talking 6.8 Western which is as close to a short action 270 as your likely to get.

.277 = 6.8mm

so not really anything new just a new short action version

to answer the question when late 2021 but with the ammo shortage they hit the gun rags and some reviewers and not much for stock on the shelf

So how does the 270 WSM stack up to it. Is it the same thing just marketed different. Like the 244 Remington. Remarket it as the 6mm rem.

Everything I can read is the 6.8 has more recoil than the 270

Don't matter ammo shortage will kill it.
Saw one comparison that included ammo price .Shells for the 6.8 was 49.99- 74.99
270 21.99- 49.99

its a 270 WSM with a long throat and fast twist to shoot heavier bullets and rated to higher pressure. a new hype on an old game.

The 6.8 Western has a fast twist barrel compared to the other .277 cartridges. It should shoot the heavy high B.C. bullets better if you think you need a heavy high B.C. .277 bullet.

Has a bit more performance (and recoil) than the 270 win. In my opinion mostly a new cartridge to sell more guns.

It's called marketing. I would imagine Jack O'Conner would have a good laugh.
270 Winchester is probably the most used elk cartridge here in the Black Hills.
Tweek the case and a different twist plus a metric designation its bound to get a following.
According to most of the gun writers of today us old gray-haired guys shouldn't have killed much without a Creedmoore.
I don't own a 270 Win. but hunted lots of times with friends who used one. Mighty fine round.
As for myself i have managed to get by with a 30-06 and added a 25-06 about two decades ago just for the fun of it.

Down here 30/30’s seemed to be the popular caliber of choice growing up. Good brush gun and still kill a deer out to 150ish. After that I just went with the old .308. For here it’s all I needed. My Uncles out West laugh at me for using such a large caliber for Whitetails. They mainly use .243’s for elk.

I flat out love shooting the .243. Can load down for yotes or 95-100 grain for deer. And i can shoot it, wife can shoot it and kids can shoot it - all comfortably. That why we have several....
