Gun tax for mental health care

Gun tax for mental health care - 06/03/22 03:06 AM

85 years ago sportsmen came together and the Pittman-Robertson Act was passed that added an 11% tax on guns, ammo and archery equipment to be set aside for conservation. I think most or all of us would agree we're ok with paying a few extra bucks for a gun or box of shells knowing that money is going towards a worthy cause.

I also think a lot of us would agree there's a mental health crisis in America that's to blame for the increase in mass shootings lately.

Would you support an added tax on firearms and ammo, like the P-R Act, to be set aside for mental health help? I know I don't want to pay any more for guns and ammo than I already am, but I think it would be good PR for gun owners.

What do ya think?

NO

If anything that mental health tax should be on social media and the main stream media.

sure, use the funds first off to give joe a cognitive ability test or no deal.

And would you trust the present government to use that money for what we think it’s for ?

Re: Gun tax for mental health care - 06/03/22 03:23 AM

No , the government is pushing and supporting the mental health decline. Trans gender grooming kids and on and on. Let the dems that caused the problem pay for it.

Right on. Let's start at the top. I couldn't agree more.

Re: Gun tax for mental health care - 06/03/22 03:24 AM

NO! It would become a slush fund for the liberal's agenda. Think about all the doors that could open adding a tax on the honest law-abiding people for the actions of a relatively few mental defective monsters. In almost every case the shooter was known by their actions to the family and authorities long before the shootings happen, yet nothing was done to make society safe from these killers. Get the families, law enforcement and court systems to recognize the danger these people pose to society and become proactive instead of reactive in stopping the threat.

As far as good PR for gun owners, I seriously doubt that would change anyone's outlook on gun owners.

Re: Gun tax for mental health care - 06/03/22 03:31 AM

No.... UNLESS that money was used ONLY for the rebuilding of insane asylums AFTER legislation was passed allowing for concerned family members to commit someone against their will.

The reason why I say that?

Because I DO believe it's a mental health issue causing all this, BUT I believe the MAIN issue is overmedication of people.

I WON'T have my tax dollars going towards "diagnosing" and medicating a perfectly sane person. And don't even try to tell me that doesn't happen because it does all day every day.

Genuine mental illness is no doubt part of the problem. But I think a bigger part is mental illness CAUSED by medication

NO, I would not support your idea.

If this administration has the ability to give out free phones and money to illegal aliens as well as wanting to cancel student loan debts, then the government can come up with funding for more mental health services.

Re: Gun tax for mental health care - 06/03/22 04:07 AM

no , because your idea of mental health help and theirs is so different , it is just going to end up another tax on guns to fund waste.

no new taxes

the money collected will only be used as a weapon against you , I prefer not to pay my abusers further enabling them to abuse me.

No. In this climate you might as well place your head squarely in the guillotine. "Gun owners admit they are the problem" will be the national headline.

I would support ending foreign aid to fund it.

I would support a mental health tax on things like alcohol, gambling, video games, drugs, and other things that cause people to lose their mind.

Never, family values have been lost in America. More church, role models, and respect is what this country needs. I'd reinstate the draft once again to teach the youth some respect for our country and one another.

You are completely correct when you say the main mental health issue is over medication. There are many root causes for why some people develop problems with mental illness .But once you have it ,it is not something you just get over by someone telling you to cheer up it can.t be that bad The medical profession /business is concerned about their profit margin I t does not interest them in long term care It serves them better to just give them more pills and hope the patients just stay numb And when those that do not stay numb and do something terrible thr doctors in charge not wanting to take any responsibly for not helping say here give this person more of these The more the government gets involved the more misguided the treatment of the patient gets .Mental illness does not get cured by a one size fits all plan of action .It must be dealt with on a one to one basis .

Another tax? I've got a ? Not trying to hijack you're post but how many of these shooters do you suppose were born again believes? Truly saved peaple who put others before themselves. All the taxes in the world can't fix selfishness and evil. Killing our own baby's has been the new normal for almost 70 years. Our county is morally bankrupt.

Re: Gun tax for mental health care - 06/03/22 02:20 PM

I think most people are kind hearted and are willing to help those that are in need of help .But more often than not those in need of that help the most are left with next to no help. All the while those that are able to work the system are cheating all the people that are trying to do the right thing

Put the mental health tax on video games.

If we only had $40B to put towards mental health. But instead, we give our money to other country's problems and celebrate mental illness here (Pride month? for example)

Tax all people employed and paid by tax dollars, say 5% to start. 1% increase every year until homeless and the mentally ill are taken care of. One year and that problem would be solved.

Absolutely not. Mental health care isn't a gun owner's problem, it's a social problem. They already enjoy wildlife on the landscape that we fund, along with outdoor infrastructure. Time for society at large to pay their fair share.

How about a tax to pay an instructor in every school in the U.S. to teach firearm instruction and safety. For credit hours of course. This course would include live fire training for firearms from shotguns to AR style rifles.

This....is the only wall surefire protection. No matter what the so called reason.

The true stopping point, is to have no soft targets .

Veterans , civilians , teachers , who apply and qualify, would be great no nonsense walls in protecting schools. The greatest army in the country are our vets who are fully trained and would love to serve their country again in protecting their citizens.

All other problems would soon weed themselves out against that wall of protection. And I bet it would stop immediately once the word gets out.

NO on wasting money on any other so called cause, when they can cut right to the chase and protect the schools immediately.

I believe Ohio just made it so after 24 hours of training any teacher could carry at school....should be for any school employee.
