Views on a tough Trapping season ahead - 06/08/22 01:21 AM
Whats everyone's view towards Trapping this season, I know there's been very little going on around here, I've seen more & more animals with health issues, more distemper & rabies. Nuisance calls are crazy this season with Gray & Red Fox being the top calls. In the past, It was a few a year. Raccoons are another one, witch we get pounded with calls in the birthing season, very few calls, but see a lot of zombie coon wandering around. mabey not enough animals taken out of the picture during trapping season. I know for sure even getting paid to trap these animals, with gas prices, seems the calls come from four different directions & far in between.

A good plan as I see it: Go out this fall and have as much fun as you can afford.

I will continue to hone my "living of the land" skills. The way things are going it won't be long before this administration has made me a fugitive.

My plans are life as usual. I trap for the pleasure of it, trap farms to get hunting rights, and i now enjoy tanning. I will trap, hunt, and fish no matter what

I figured out a way to keep my gas expenses next to nothing and still run a pretty good line.
I'm going to hire an Amish man to drive me around my trapline!!!

Re: Views on a tough Trapping season ahead - 06/08/22 04:35 AM
Last year I didn’t get to trap, I worked 7 days a week all through season. This year I have a new job with lots of PTO. I used 20 hours of it when we had our son last month, I’m gonna be using 40 hours of it for a week vacation with my parents and brothers at Georgetown lake in Montana over the 4th of July, and depending on how much overtime I work (my job allows me the option of getting paid time and a half for OT or bank an hour and a half PTO per hour worked, and they can’t tell me no when I decide to use that time) that should leave me with around 80ish hours of paid time off when trapping season rolls around. So, I’ll can work it out with my supervisor, who’s pretty laid back about time off anyways, the way our check laws are set up I can take one paid day off a week for 8 weeks, run a good trapline, and spend some time with Mother Nature and my wife and children, pass on the knowledge I have, learn some new things, and maybe kill enough nice coyotes and foxes to make that blanket I’ve always dreamed about.
For me, it’s never been about the money. I killed my first coyote at 13, and I don’t know how many it’ll take to curb the craving to kill more but I haven’t got there yet. I just straight up love to trap canines. I’ve trapped em for $7 a piece, and I’ve trapped em for $120 a piece, and I enjoyed both equally.

For me it will be trapping as usual.
I have never done it for the money. I am retired and do it because it gives me something to do that I love and gets me plenty exercise. I have over 5000 acres of private farmland that I trap. About 3000 of these are within 5 miles of my house and these usually get most my time. Coons alone on these properties can pay my gas bill. Everyone wants coons trapped.
The other properties are no more than 15 miles away. These are small and most all are close to each other so 15- 20 miles in my truck a day is fine with me.
I’m 66 years old yesterday.
The exercise and piece of mind I get out there to me is worth the gas to me.

I'll be out as normal. May have to do a little less traveling in the canoe though. I bought myself a little Honda that gets 36mpg, but it won't carry the canoe around. With gas so expensive, it's gotta be worth it to drive the ol truck around.

Animals have the ability to adapt and so do we. I just bought a 2000 Toyota Echo. Gets 42 MPG and has good ground clearance. Good in up to 10" of snow but better for an auto line. With a large trunk and back seat removed, this car has it all! Plus, most of these will go up to 400,000 miles without major repairs if cared for properly.

I am lucky to have land to trap very close to my place . I could walk to a lot of it if I needed too . Been trapping much of it for 70 years now ,and hope to get to trap it for some years to come . 80th birthday coming up in August and if the good Lord is willing l will have traps out this Winter . I am still able to get around quite well . Those critters need thinned out if they are worth 50 cents or 50 bucks . The farmers around me know I will keep them in check as I have for their Fathers and Grandfathers before them . The trap line keeps me active , and that is worth the little it may cost in these hard times . I've been through every boom and bust since the early 50's . This bust will not stop me . Maybe next year will be a boom , one can dream .

Re: Views on a tough Trapping season ahead - 06/08/22 01:37 PM
We cancelled one vacation due to my wife's poor knees and now with the first knee surgery scheduled for June we won't go any place the rest of the year. So it is garden and close to home activities for me. Trapping will be on the menu and I will work hard on rats, more on coon than the last 5 years and run a couple short canine lines. A few more years of low interest and or minimal markets and we may well not even have a place to unload fur at any price. With coyotes losing favor that makes most of our WI fur very low in value. Even if I spend a $1,000 more than my fur is worth, compared to a supply dealer, fur buyer or fur ranch owner my losses are minimial and I can enjoy losing those dollars. There are persons I know that spend way more than that golfing or bowling or buying lottery tickets.

I have never trapped for the money. Paid buzzard to teach me to trap. Best money I've ever spent. Gained 20 years of knowledge and a life long friend. My father passed away 5 years ago and I lost interest in rabbit hunting. I realized that rabbit hunting isn't the same without dad. I used to trap for the rabbit population on my 155 acres as well as the few farms that I had exclusive hunting rights.
I'm a business man. Have owned my own company for 23 years.
In my opinion furs will never be worth the cost to catch them and put them up for sale.
The only money to be made in trapping is nuisance trapping.
Nobody wants a trapper until something happens that triggers them emotionally. Cat or lap dog goes missing.
Everyone hates a trapper until they need one.
I charge dearly. Trapping is an art that very few people know. I'm not the best but I'm the best around here.

Ill put in a few coyote sets close to home. The boy asked every day to check traps before daycare when he was 2. Hopin he will be more excited to do it this year. May do a little more pheasant hunting this year.

I plan to keep at it as usual. Hit it hard for 3 weeks then take a break.
Several years ago I got back into water trapping and a fascination came over me on mink trapping.
Plan to keep at it as long as my body holds out.
I'm giving a mink demo at the national convention this year. If you happen to be there shout it out.

Re: Views on a tough Trapping season ahead - 06/17/22 05:44 PM
Think I’m gonna take a break Aug-Nov then get back after it. Got more properties than I can keep up with now. These 95-103 degree temps aren’t the best conditions, but there’s still critters to be caught. Need at least August off to catch up on some sleep before hunting season starts in September.

I've been trapping coyotes for 50 years but I'm not skinning coyotes for $ 15.00. I'm going to trap for a couple ranches but they are going to have to pay. I'm not going to catch 150 to 200 to skin the best 20 or 30. The high gas won't affect me much but all the work for little pay does

I'm going to spend more time In the deer blind and do more Ice fishing.

Well think some will be out trapping, but can't see alot of trapping going on.
All ways takes a few years to get out that prices are way down.
But thinking theift should slow down.
Just having the western a couple weeks ago, still have the regular die hards
Buying there normal supplies.
We will be out trapping , A.D.C. work still pays well.
But we will run our regular trap line.

Will continue to trap animals on my own farm when the population gets out of control and need to get everything back in balance. Will not trap anywhere else unless paid. Trapping is a hard job. Not driving around skinning, fleshing, and putting up fur to take a loss.

I will likely only trap nuisance animals by request. Might do a few mink blind sets. I really get a kick out of blind setting for mink.
I might try getting my first otter or badger. Maybe a trip north for marten or Fisher, been wanting to do that forever.

One thing is certain, the catch will be small. For years we had a ton of "Carry Over" coon, ranch mink, and other species. Most fur will be bought by speculators at lower prices.

It is only advice. I know people would ( now will ) trap if fur was worthless.
Since harvest levels on most species are at or near record lows, my guess most trappers are like me. They have standards.

I still plan on running a short line within 5 miles of the house, what coyotes and fox I catch I will donate to our MTA tanned fur project,I'll set a couple of bobcat and marten sets out when that season opens in Dec.When trapping, hunting and fishing is in your blood, you just do it no matter what,it's an addiction, but a good one!

I'd like to run a long line for a couple weeks sometime just to see what kind of numbers I can put up and to say I did it at least once. It would be nice if it would at least be a little profitable but who knows when that will be or what tomorrow will bring. Might do it this year or next. I can personally afford the adventure now..... way things are going I might not be able to do it in 5 or 10 years.... trapping is still fun for me and an adventure.... plus I could always use the experience if fur prices ever came back

Re: Views on a tough Trapping season ahead - 06/20/22 04:43 PM
As much as I would like spend a few weeks away from home to run my northern line I think I'm going to pass and just run my local line. Coyote numbers are down around here due to hunting pressure and wolves moving in. Might give them a break for now unless working for bounty. Might concentrate more on skunks and beaver for now.
