Beaver tail tanning question

Beaver tail tanning question - 06/11/22 05:22 PM

We have never tanned them and never. Seen them after the tan.

Jerry skinned some.

When they are tanned does the black outside skin stay on them or come.off?

It came off a couple when he skinned them but we didn't know if maybe they were slipping.

We are wondering because they talk about dyeing beaver leather and we wondered if it the black skin stayed on or off after tanning.

Please don't make fun of my question. I really dont.know and would like to find out.

The few I have done, poorly I might add, skin stayed on but lightened considerably.

Best to remove the grain(black outer skin)when making leather.
Remove it before tanning, same as de hairing when making leather.
I tanned a few back in the day to make knife sheaths and watchbands.

that would make a good beaver's tail skin, you need to do the following operations.
Sorting the skins in the batch
Soaking the hides
Furring
Dehairing and dehairing
Soling
Face and bartack cleaning
Washing
Dezoling
Softening
Washing (dry cleaning)
Pelletizing
Tanning
Tumbling

cathryn

Conduct a SEARCH for "beaver".
1. In the top block type "beaver"
2. in the bottom block type "GritGuy" (Do not have to use quotation marks).
3. Scroll to bottom of page and click on SEARCH FORMS

A lot of good information is found in the replies.

They don't use them for carrying rubles. That's what the wheel borrows are for.
(Just kidding with you KOSOI. Those are some finely done wallets. And besides, your ruble is gaining traction against the US dollar. It might be me looking for a new wheel for my wheel borrow the way our inflation is growing.)
