LOL, When I was stationed in Biloxi, Miss in '68, some of us guy's went to P-cola for the beach, and one of the guy's was body surfing when a crab locked on to his sack. Life was hard for that boy for the rest of the time I knew him.
The shape says blueclaw crab. The spots are strange, I've never seen one with spots though.
I can't eat the softshell crabs. My wife will fry one up and eat it on bread. I can't get over the fact that it's a whole crab shell and all. Once I've picked the meat out of one they're delicious. I like steaks and burgers but I don't want a big slice of cow.
Fried softshell crab is right near the top of my favorite food list. You need to clean them right and use hot oil. I like blue crab meat picked from the hard ones, but it is a calorie neutral adventure with all of the work I have to do to pick one clean.
I am going to Charleston, SC here in a couple of weeks. I thought I might get a couple of collapsible pods to try to catch some crabs in. Wire or netting better? I like the thoughts of folding them up until next beach trip. I see expensive ones and cheap ones?? Any thoughts from you beach goers.
Same family but not a blue crab, but you eat them as if it were, not a calico either, I believe it's a variety of "swimming crab" , of which theres a number of varieties all over the world.
I fish blue crabs all summer and almost never eat the darn things... not worth the trouble...
Not a blue crab I've ever seen and I was a commercial crabber for about five years. Look and the ones in the basket DelewareBob posted. They are blue crabs.
Where were you when you found the crab? It is shaped like our blue crab, but not colored like one.
