Will a old victor 1.5 LS hold a coon? - 06/15/22 01:55 PM
Title says it all, if I make pocket sets for mink do you think the coons will just "let themselves" out of them if I use the 1.5s? They don't have too much power but perhaps the lockup is enough to hold them?
I don't want to hold the coons is the point lol

Also whats some good ways to insure you drown the coons if you do target them with pockets?

It’s worked on millions already, why not a few more.

Put something heavy on the trap with a long chain 20 to 24” is all it takes on a fairly steep bank.

As long as that trap isn’t weak, it’ll absolutely hold a coon. I can think of better traps nowadays but it’ll definitely work. Stake the trap in deeper water with a drowner lock or swivel.

A 1.5 long spring is a great for coon and mink trapping Like Golf Ball said add some chain and another swivel or two and sharpen your skinning knife

If you’re going to have a tripped trap, may as well have something to show for it. At least you’ll be helping the ground nesting birds.

Take the chain off the spring. Put a rivet through the hole in the frame opposite the spring. Right under the pivot of the jaws. Attach the chain there. Coon will pull into the spring stead of away from it. Lots of info on drowning rigs . You may have to drill a hole for the rivet.

Yep coons need thinned out to keep population healthy. Buzzards crows possums and eagles gotta eat too. If humans dont kill a few populations get to big then crash where there is almost none then starts over. Its not a bad thing to cull them back a bit.

I had some trouble with them chewing their foot. Best to drown them .But it is a great trap.
Wanna buy some?

The 1.5 LS wouldn't be my first choice for coon. But, if you use 3/32 cable about 5 feet long with a drowning clip and get a front foot catch, you should have a good chance of holding the coon. I always felt thigh deep water would drown the largest coon if it's caught by the front foot.

When I was growing up #1 and #1 1/2 long springs made up most of my traps. Caught more coon than I can count in them. 2 to 3 feet of water is deep enough for drowning

Based on your question, a #1 or 1 1/2 long spring staked solid would offer the best chance that coons will pull out (and mink likely would not). You will still hold some coons.

Beat me to it!
The coons along my river seem to try everything before they head for the water. Trick is holding them until they head to the deep. Also make sure your trap chain is as far down your slid as you can get it and stake is positioned so trap chain cant get wrapped around it, preventing it from going down the slide.

No lure at your pocket sets will greatly decrease your coon catch.

How deep of water should I be looking for?
If you can get the coon into at least 6-8 inches of water , they can't chew .
To drown them you need 2-3 feet of water .

Check your regs for restraining traps for coon.

Check your regs for restraining traps for coon.
Here in NB you can only target them with dog proofs if you intend to restrain them. But you can still use footholds set to drown.

They sure will. I’ve caught quite a few coon in my mink sets with the victor 1.5s. Like others mentioned, if you’re trapping in water, there’s a good chance they’ll be there waiting for you.

Yes it will. Add swivels. Cant have enough swivels for coon.

Red squirrels paid more than mink or coon so re-direct your energy in trapping
