It has begun!! - 06/16/22 03:06 PM

Well it is officially green bean season. Every year me and my grandmother can around 150 quarts of green beans.

Picked two out of the four rows yesterday morning and ended up with this.

And then they turned into this last night...this was the first batch of the year

Gotta pick the other two rows this evening and do it again!

That there is a pretty sight... It'll be another two months before they're ready here (snowed day before yesterday).

Canned green beans are the only vegetable that is better canned than it is fresh or frozen.

Couldn’t agree more. Fresh or canned, love them. Worked in a green bean cannery 2 summers as a teenager. Unfortunately child labor laws restricted me to no more than 70 hrs a week. Those look great coondagger

Looks great . Hope it's not as hot there as it is where I'm at ! but 15-20 mph ocean breeze feels good.
Back home in Ky my son said it hit 100 yesterday heat index 110.

I much prefer fresh with new potatoes. But, I like putting up a few jars just in case the power goes out. my first 2 rounds of Blue Lake Green Beans didn't do worth a squat because of the weather. I have some Contender Bush beans going now, hopefully I can double crop them and get a few bushel this year yet.

It's HOT, that's why I have to pick them in the morning before work

Been 97-100 degrees for the high here about every day this week

I am slowly converting my grandmother from Half Runners to Strike beans. She has planted half runners since she was a kid, but the Strike throw a lot bigger and healthier looking bean and they string 100X easier. We planted a few contender last year but preferred the strike to them

Well I got everything picked and grandmother opened up a sweat shop to get them all snapped and ready to can. She runs a beauty shop behind her house and the ladies that come to get their hair done snap beans. One lady stayed 8 hours and helped.

In total so far I have picked 7 bushels and we have canned 107 quarts. 1 jar didn't seal, so technically 106 quarts. I think we are going to give anything else I pick away. We are eating 2017 beans now so we have plenty

WOW!

2 question for you:
1.How big is your garden? It has to be huge.
2. What kind of beans do you plant.

This needs to be on Cathryn's what makes you country post. I think this may be the most "country" thing I've ever heard, lmao.

"Oh you want a permanent wave done today? Great dear, that'll give you lots of time to snap beans as you wait."

hahahaha

I hope YOU take the time to learn the canning process. I hope she's still alive to teach your kids one day too, but if she isn't, at least you'll be able to and share with them the pictures and memories.

They love it!! One lady came back the day after her appointment and snapped beans for a few hours. Most of them are widowed and don't have anyone. The beauty shop is their therapy/gossip/haircut all in one

My bad! They are called "Strike" green beans. Very good healthy size bean with little to no strings and great taste. Makes it easy to put them up since there are very few strings
