Kansas guys …Question ? - 06/20/22 01:36 PM

Why are cattle and pigs dying ? Is it the Heat …or lack of feed available, from the Biden administration ..or the high cost of feed ? Thanks

Probably heat, humidity and shipping stress.

I haven't heard anything out of the normal. I think K-52 nailed it, Nessy!

My son keeps seeing it on his phone…just though I’d get the real explanation…instead of some fake new on the TV.

Don't know about the hogs but the cattle were from heat stress. Simple as that. I've watched a couple videos where the individual obviously had little knowledge about the situation were coming up with possible explanations that just had no merit.

Exactly right. Got too hot too quick and fat cattle not acclimated to it at all.

Just saw a video of a feed lot in Ulysses, with hundreds of dead cattle. Black cattle, hot temps and sun, not to mention humidity. What a shame....what a hit!

Was good to see you and Patty the other day Jeff. You were there at one of my kinda busy times, so didn't get to visit much!

10K sounds like a huge number but when 640K a week go to slaughter but it is about 1.6% so a loss for sure how far over normal loss would be the question

Big loss for the owner of cattle but doesn't take much of increase in carcass weight to cover the loss. The heat causing the owners to sell earlier and the packers pulling contracted cattle sooner to cover the losses will lower the carcass weights though.

If you want to see guys with a nasty job, take a drive to darling international in Garden City KS. Right off HWY 50 by the airport. Big grey concrete structure you can see from the road. They process those deads. Hides are still good. Got some tough Mexicans there skinning those bloated things. The meat fat and bone all gets used too. Most of it for pet and poultry feed. Those guys that work there have probably the worst job in the USA.
