We call them powder post beetles. I think that's the same thing Northof50 is talking about. I get them in my maple firewood at camp a lot. So far I haven't had any issues with them getting in my lumber stores here at home but I keep and eye out for them.

A Termite man once suggested I move my wool pile farther from my house. Said he walked between the house and the stacked wood and could here insects chewing the wood. That was before 1980. He sprayed the woodpile. Think he used Lindane?

normally they go in the sap wood that has just been laid down

before kiln drying was a major problem with all those little hole- actually the antique furniture makers looked for that wood for the character. Don't usually go deep into the wood.

The sugar content is what the larvae feeds on so that is why the spring wood or sap wood is the go to. Peel the bark and let the chickidees have a go at them
