UCLA and USC to the Big 10?

UCLA and USC to the Big 10? - 06/30/22 09:42 PM

From Profootball.com.:

The big business of college football is getting another shakeup, with USC and UCLA poised to join the Big Ten.

The move, which is not done but is reportedly very close, would be devastating to the Pac-12, which is already on shaky ground in the television revenue department and is now about to lose both its teams in the lucrative Los Angeles market. And it would be a major boost to the Big Ten, a traditionally Midwestern conference that has never had that kind of footprint on the West Coast.

It’s also a reminder of how much the college sports landscape is dominated by football, with all other sports mere afterthoughts when conference alignments are determined. USC and UCLA don’t fit with the Big Ten at all in the other college sports, but the opportunity to generate huge money on future TV contracts thanks to games like USC-Ohio State or USC-Michigan are too big for the conference to pass up.

The Big Ten and the SEC are already far ahead of the other conferences in TV revenue, and that gap will only increase with the twin moves of USC and UCLA joining the Big Ten along with Texas and Oklahoma joining the SEC. The Pac-12, Big 12 and ACC are now the also-rans of the Power 5 conferences, to the point where we may soon have only a Power 2 conferences, with any remaining big-time football schools needing to either join the Big Ten or SEC, or get left behind.

With USC, UCLA, Texas and Oklahoma leaving their conferences, the coming years are seeing another major realignment in college football. And there will surely be more major moves coming.

The Big 10 will soon have to name themselves the Big 20.

Just no. One, the travel is rediculus. Two,. When was the last time either school was relevant? Wasnt a fan of the last expansion. Third, ever since the BCS its been diminished and this will be making the B1G a super conference and who else would be left in the PAC thats been relevant?

Granted the people in charge of the two conferences hasn't been all yhat bright the last few years, especially with thr covis debacles.

It’s official: USC and UCLA are the newest Big Ten programs.

Both schools announced on Thursday evening that they have joined the Big Ten, starting with the 2024 football season.

The schools will be Big Ten members in all sports, but this move is all about football. It’s football that generates the enormous television revenues that enrich college administrators, and it’s football that motivates every conference realignment.

For the Big Ten, getting USC and UCLA is a huge step into the lucrative Los Angeles television market. For USC and UCLA, the move puts them squarely into the middle of one of the two major college football conferences.

With this move and the departure of Texas and Oklahoma from the Big 12 to the SEC, the Big Ten and SEC are now so far ahead of the other conferences that there really aren’t a “Power Five” anymore, but a Power Two, with the Big Ten and SEC serving as the marquee conferences in college football. It’s likely that more moves are coming, with the remaining top programs outside the Big Ten and SEC trying to join one of those two conferences, and the future of college football being centered around two major conferences that have far more resources than the rest.

The projection is that TV revenues could wind up over a billion with these and the rest of the Big 10 teams. Sports revenues are a major source of income for colleges. Lot of money in collegiate and pro sports in the USA and the colleges are aligning up for revenue streams as much or more then for conference placings etc.
Travel expenses will be a small cost when compared to the revenue they hope to generate.

52carl...I think otherwise... more money in the USC and UCLA coffers means they can “purchase” more high level recruits. Personally, I think it is an untraditional move. I felt the same way when the Big 10 brought in the other schools a few years back. So what now ....The Big 15? Just my take...

next up Notre Dame.
Next big 10 TV deal worth over a billion, ND's deal with their network may not be enough to keep ND independent and ND may need to join one of the super conferences just to be able to schedule games.
Now a west coast team gets to travel to the east coast and play a game at about 9 am.
I'm not sure if they've got NIL completely worked out yet either.
Completely losing their thinly guised amateur status and becoming completely the NFL minor league.
oh well.....

Now to me Norte Dame makes more sense than the west coast teams.

One of the stupidest moves ever.............. why the (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) should any conference extend from coast to coast.
