Scars...... - 07/02/22 08:04 PM

My grandfather told me once after I received stiches that scars are God's way of reminding us how tough you are (thing's that happen to you in life) or how dumb you are (things we bring on our self in life). This comment was made to me after receiving stiches that would one day be a reminder of how dumb I was. I now have many scars. Sadly most caused by the dumb reminder variety but not all. Instead of sharing a scar story I will share a scar related story.

My wife once got a perm which reminded me of her mother's hair . Early in our marriage and in my life I decided to teach her a lesson. I had my head shaved bald, Half way through the barber said dang and I new I had made a mistake! Got home and my wife and her friend were hanging out. As if making a point pulled off my hat and strutted through the house in front of them. They both laughed to the literal point of tears. I grabbed a beer and stomped out. Lesson/point not made that day. Lots of little bang ups from poor choices and bad luck has me keeping some hair on the head now.

At a class reunion talking about my deceased mother this story came up. It happened to be a funny scar story. Some of mine are not.

Share yours. Pics if you want. I would share a pic but can't get my phone to work cause I am old! lol

I got my share and then some. Hold the family record for most trips for stitches in one month, five, and overall. The summer I turned 14 I had saved up for a swiss army knife for my birthday. Had mama drive me into Birmingham to Roger's Army Navy to buy the biggest one they had, a champion model, with 26 blades. Before summer was over I think I cut myself with all 26, lol.

Many have mental wounds that as of yet have not healed. I always was told a scar was a sign that a healing had taken place. Wonder what Jesus would say if asked how and why he got His scars?

Yeah, like many here - I have scars from chainsaws, knives, fish teeth, etc. By far the worst one I cannot see w/o using two mirrors is a 4-6" scar in the back of my skull where an acoustic neuroma (brain tumor) the size of a medium potatoe was removed. I'm not one to shave my head or cut all of my hair off, but if I did this would scare folks, including me the one time I did see the reflection. That surgery left other scars too, but...

At least your head scar is legit.

Mine involved a mean gal, liquor and a Louisville slugger.

I'm glad they were able to get yours taken care of and hope nothing lingers for you.

Got rid of that gal and nothing lingering for me either.

Re: Scars...... - 07/02/22 09:08 PM

My first scar happened when I was 2 years old. I had 3 older sisters, they was melting crayons in a can over an open fire. Why, I don't know. I wanted to see in the can so one of them leaned me over so I could see in the can and dropped me in face first. I had melted hot wax all over my face. My mom yelled frantically for my dad at the barn. He came and rushed me to a Doctor 7 miles away. They did the best they could to get the cooled off wax off. I had one bad scar on my cheek below my right eye and its now part of my character. I healed and remember none of it.
Thru the years when the topic would come up, one sister was washing dishes, one was working in the garden and the younger one was playing on the other side of the house when it happened. Not one would tell who did it. It wasn't like I had any grudge and I don't know if they were afraid of getting into trouble at the time. I'm sure my mom knew which one dropped me and would never tell me. It was just something that happened and there was no need for any forgiveness on my part. But I guess that it was just so terrible to them they couldn't confess it. My 2 younger sisters took it to the grave with them. My oldest sister still says she was washing dishes and I believe her, not that it matters.

Third not me being stupid scar happened when I was an infant. Mom got off the one end of water bed and I rolled off the other. Hit my head on night stand. Stiches through the right eye brow. Sometimes when I get mad it itches. Mom was awesome woman but I was first born and she did not learn much from the growing up of her siblings. By the true Grace of God I live! lol Before someone asks about the first two not stupid scars..I count my belly button and I'm not Jewish. winky emoji that I don't know how to do!

Earliest scar? I had to have been 2 maybe 3. I know this based on the timeline of just when Dad added on to the house. It was the summer of 72.

Dad was right out the sliding glass door working on the floor joists and I wouldn't hear no that I couldn't go out there. So running from mama I tripped and clipped the corner of the TV, the big full size console TV, gashing my forehead. The first of many stitches to come and injuries, including a broken arm, running from mama.

I’ve lost track of my scars. I’ve been stitched up over 20 times. Eight times from surgeries. Six times from cuts in the mines. There were a lot of cuts I didn’t get stitched, but needed it. Anymore, I use Super Glue to hold my cuts together.

My first scar I was 5, I stepped on a broken soda bottle. I remember stepping on it and making my way up the sidewalk to the front door. And I vividly remember seeing my bloody foot print coming all the way up the sidewalk.
I don't remember anything after that until I woke up in the Dr office.
Found out later on my Dad punched me and knocked me out. He said it was to calm me down.
Memories like this, sure make me miss him. frown

What if your first scars are from abuse? Physical and mental? I guess you could say they made me stronger but weak for most of my childhood. Wasn’t until I had my daughter that I began to see them as guidance, like everything to not to do as a father

A Louisville Slugger is a nasty way to acquire a scar.
Two years ago I acquired a "zipper" in my chest from open heart surgery. The tumor surgery 36 years ago resulted in facial paralysis on my left side, totally deaf in left ear. Beats being dead though..

Those are the ones that all good moral people feel pain from. Things that should never happen, ever.

I think a better way to put it would be scars are reminders of where you’ve been, and guidance as to where you need to be

First scar I remember is on my right wrist. I was 8 years old and we had one of those French glass doors with all the little panes of windows. I was having my first party with kids at the house... a Halloween party. We decided to have my Uncle who was dressing up as Freddy Krueger come over to scare the kids. We all were in the living room when we heard a tapping on the window. One of the kids got up the nerve to go and open the curtains and there was Freddy. I screamed and ran, really hamming it up to scare everyone and went to run through the door on the opposite side of the house. My palm hit the handle to open the door as I was running full force and slid off the handle and right through the pane of glass. And that was the end of the Halloween party, lol.

I've had a few cuts stitched over the years but last year was a wound that sucked at the time but now looking back. I have pictures of it as it healed. Pretty amazing what the body can do. I can pm pictures as it healed for those interested but the initial cut is kind of rough for the open thread.

I have so many that I don't remember where all of them are. I have some on my melon. One on my left index finger from not knowing that someone sharpened the knife I had been asking to have sharpened for weeks. One across my wrist where some entitled XXXXX decided that I was in her way while I was opening a case of TP so she shoved her way through me and opened my wrist pretty good. She didn't care either. I should have opened her up. I have a triangle of scars on my right hip from the arthroscopic that did not good to delay my inevitable total hip replacement from a staff assault at work. I also have the huge scar from the replacement. I have a pretty good sized hole in my leg right now that I have no idea how I got. Pretty sure it is going to leave one heck of a scar when it heals. I took the end of my finger off when something fell down on the stuff I was cutting with a skil saw. No scar there. It all grew back somehow. Don't even remember which finger it was.

I'm still waiting on a scar from a knife fight or gunshot wound. I did take some birdshot in my left ear but it didn't amount to much trauma. I have scars on my hips from bone marrow taps they took when I was a kid. They suspected I had leukemia. Didn't.

A few scars and a crooked nose from a bumper jack when I was a kid. Any man should have at least a few scars. Flipping a double bit axe and catching it was the stupidest one. Shouldn't have tried for 3 rotations. Lol

My brother has that honor. Picked up a couple 00 pellets when he moved into the line of fire. One through the right calf and the other in the outside of the left foot. Standing 125 yards away, the one through calf was stopped by the denim jean and rolled out his pants leg when he stood up.

Re: Scars...... - 07/03/22 12:17 PM

Got one I can't see from a L4-L5, L5-S1 right discectomy.

One with the best story is a tiny one on my right wrist. Ran a sick the diameter of a pencil 1/2 - 2/3 of the way through my right wrist. It started an infection almost immediately and got me 4 days in the hospital with IV vancomycin. THAT STUFF....................is NASTY !!!!! Wore out the vein with each bag. Had to find a new site for the IV needle each time. But, overall........looking back, I guess, preferable to losing my right arm.

I slipped on the ice while blowing snow and landed face down in the gutter. Blood started flowing fast and furious but I pulled my stocking hat and finished the job. I came inside and my wife saw me take off my cap - about an inch of skin was hanging over my left eye so off we went to the ER.

7 yrs old. Riding my bike in circles on the back concrete porch. Getting faster, lost control, slammed straight on into the brick of the house wall. Slide right off the banana seat and hit the post where the handle bars connect to the bike. Yep, right between the legs. 7 stitches. I’m the only son of my parents. Dad’s thinking “well that I ends the family tree “….my wife and I have 10 kids(5&5)… laugh

Re: Scars...... - 07/03/22 03:00 PM

I have numerous scars from mishaps and accidents but one stands out in my memory. 60 years ago I was skinning a muskrat and pulling on the head of the Pelt with an old doll hunting knife in hand. The pelt tore free and the knife jerked into my cheek under the right eye. It was a superficial but the scar is still there. I think that's how I got a lifelong case of muskrat fever.
