Community Gardens ?

Was just talking a little walk in ours . It's on the small side this year due to folks not wanting to come out due to covid. As long as you pitch in some way, a pack of seeds helping set up, whatever you have permission to take what you want in reason.






Any of y'all do anything similar?
Btw good ways on preserving bid nests ? The fruit trees have a few empty ones. Was thinking spray on clear coat.

Prefer to do my own garden and give away the excess. That way other people cant screw things up.

I’m with Sniper. I wouldn’t be cut out for a community garden unless there was set work days and/or cost sharing for all involved. Our pastor has talked to me about setting up something similar at church, but I told him unless everyone is on the same page then I can’t foresee it working. With that said, yalls looks good and it sounds like it’s working out so congrats!

We use to when I was a kid back in the 60’s. A lot of mom’s were stay at home mom’s back then. Three mom’s worked the garden after tilling. Us kids pulled weeds and such. We didnt hardly buy a vegetable back then. Either me, or my dirt, has totally lost the ability to grow anything, now

My ground that he tills, I plant the corn and tomatoes while he plants the peppers and potatoes. We each get more than enough and have extra to give friends.
The women plant stuff like broccoli, cucumbers and such that we also have enough to give some away. Works out good with him and I splitting the garden.

Toss them bird nests on the ground near a good fox and coyote area.Throw some egg shells in and around it,,and bed your trap in front of it.GREAT attractor for trapping.

I like seeing them. Bunch of them in my town. Churches, schools and parks have them. Pretty cool for those of us that live in town.

I have my own mini garden in my backyard, but some folks don't have the room or knowledge.

Great idea to let kids and others know and understand where food comes from.

Likely no need to spray for preservation, but, I think it's a good idea to spray it for mites and other bugs. What bird built that crappy looking nest? LOL

Our county runs a garden program. On county property, they plow and disc up some prime farm ground. They then divide the fields up into sections, marked with flags. You can sign up for sections, I have had three for the last seven years. No cost, free for everyone.Surprisingly, in a county of over 100,000 residents, I don’t think there’s more than 20 folks signing up….and maybe a dozen of us that actually take care of their gardens. I have yellow and green beans, sweet corn, zucchinis, and lots of pumpkin plants.

Used to be a big thing in the 60's for us. Even before that my Grandpa on Dad's side would share crop in town. Grandma was a canning addict and Grandpa would about bury her in beans and peas. He had several gardens going around town.

I got tired of the ponchos and sandals but man they could grow some "lettuce" that would make you watch Tk and Mike and eat Doritos for hours.

Not a community garden as described here but for 3 years I worked up and planted about 3/4 of an acre garden in a small community near my home. I planted the garden to a whole host of veggies. Our men's Bible study met early and then the 4-5 of us weeded or harvested depending upon the season. The whole idea was to put the produce in the entrance to faith based thrift store and ask for donations. We estimated we gathered about 6,000 lbs. of produce and we did not receive enough donations to cover the seed costs let alone add to the food pantry. The 2nd year three of the guys lost interest in working the garden, so it got away from me as I had my own to care for.
People would not even come out to help pick. People would actually set in their cars and wait until I brought the stuff in and then take it. Many came in really nice autos and would not pay a dollar for a dozen ears of corn.
The last year I planted the whole thing to sweet corn with several matiurities and stages of planting. Some kid found it fun to run down the corn with their 4- wheeler and that is when I quit planting. Neighbor farmer seeded it to grass for them and now they have another nearlly acre to mow.

Same here, we have a large enough garden for my family, our chickens, and a bunch of other people. I will give the produce away to people but I won't let them come pick it themselves because a lot of people don't respect others things.

And that there is the difference between collective effort and collectivism.

The thrift store staff actually wanted to start out with say 10 or so local families or people that would each do about 2-3,000 square feet and raise for themselves, and donate. They got one taker so we opted to try this. I could see after a year or two why few wanted to plant a garden and this is in a very rural setting.
We have had 6 families move out of our small unincorporated community the last 3 years. All had gardens, none of the new owners do. They all prefer mowing grass.

The ones who moved in did so for lower property taxes. They could plant gardens for the value that it would provide them, but for them the only value is money.
I have come to the point that I count value in calories and BTUs.

Had a lady down the street from where we have our garden ask about setting it up for a community garden but when I asked if she was willing to help work the ground and plant she lost interest. Ours is fairly small but the wife has canned 180 quarts of beans, 20 quarts of corn and lots of fresh snow peas,peppers, and lettuce and definitely helps fill the pantry.

Every community garden I've seen has failed. The lazy ones ruin it every time.
