Trap storage? - 08/12/22 02:12 AM
Hey guys, I was recently given a bunch of old 1.5 coils and other coon/ mink/ muskrat footholds. They haven’t been used in a long time, and have a good coating of rust. Some were rusting heavily, but most just had surface rust. Since I don’t plan on running a huge raccoon line this fall, I boiled them in walnuts, let them dry, and then put them in crates and totes. They took a really good coating of dye, and are black as coal. Will they store well like this, or should I give them a coating of wax as well? Thanks!!!

For coon your probably good to go. Wax may help prevent some further rusting but I good coat of dye will probably do about the same.
Storing them under a roof? They'll be fine. If not, wax 'em.

Depends, if they’re left out where they have a good chance of getting wet from time to time I would wax them, but if storing indoors they’re fine just dyed.

Even indoors you have to consider waxing. If you store in a basement that's damp they will rust. Wax them then no worries

Don't trust a 55 gallon barrel even with a gasket to keep out rain water. I found out the hard way.

Ok for what its worth = Wal Mart has for 19.95. It will hold 55 = MB 550s each with 13 inch of chain and a fox hollow bullet skake. DO NOT load it this full then try to move it LOL! I did this = Experience = I have 200 plus MB 550s. So did 50. In Wal Mart 19 95 dollar box. Took 2 dollar tube of silicone Used it around edge. Put it in lure shed. I have large lure shed. It stinks good. After 1 year. Took traps out of box. In lure shed. NO smell. Cost less than 25 dollars. And it works. No smells

Totes may seal up nice and tight but you still need to consider condensation. Best not to seat them and store them inside.

I keep mine outside in the weather in milk crates. All waxed. Never had a problem doing them this way, no rust.

Mine are sprayed with fogging oil or wd40 while they sit in the garage.

The OP stated that he dyed them with walnut hulls and are nice and black - why undo all that with a vinegar bath only to re dye and then wax. Seems like a waste of time and effort.

The only traps I don't wax are Body Grips and Dogless. So I would put a coat of wax on them and store until ready to use.
