Don’t be. Good put up just takes practice. Post your pics, and you will get helpful tips. I guarantee every one of us has screwed up a good number of pelts learning proper put up.

Example, those rats I posted earlier in this thread, look at the noses. I didn’t think to pin the nose in place on the end of that wire stretcher. Lesson learned!

I actually noticed those noses, and am curious if there's a big dock on that sort of thing?

Re: Summer doldrums.. finished fur pics - 08/13/22 03:27 AM

I don’t know for sure. I never have caught enough rats to really know if it hurt anything or not, but I imagine you probably lose a little on size? Guess it would depend on how they’re measured. The most muskrats I’ve ever caught in a season was like 12 and most years I catch zero. I caught those in a stock pond when I lived in Montana, here in Nevada I don’t target them at all, there’s not enough of them to make it worth my time.

I meant the marten.......haha, which apparently are fisher. They looked small so assumed they were marten.

Re: Summer doldrums.. finished fur pics - 08/18/22 11:10 PM

That first one was a big tom who had been fighting, he was infected and had lost the hair for a 1/4" to 1/2" around all of his wounds. So I had to trim out all of the bald spots and make sure everything laid flat and sew it up, flip it and make sure it looked right and redo any bad spots before I dried him. My dad looked at it and said, "I'd throw that over the bank." I spent eight hours working on that one cat... but I sold him for $800. I'll work for $100/hr.

Here is a picture of a coon ,a red fox a mink and a coyote i caught during the 2017 season. How things change over the years As a kid starting into trapping in the 1960's muskrats where in every small stream and trickle of water My Dad trapped in the late 1940' and he would carry an empty 50lb burlap feed bag to carry his catch in . There was plenty of rats in the 1970,s but by the 1980,s they where becoming scarce .Coyotes when unheard of in my part of south central PA until the mid 1980's Grey fox outnumbered the red fox in the early 1950,s And mink where also rare until about the 1980,sNow if you have the properties to trap coyote have expanded into every pocket of cover and mink are so plentiful that when ever I see brown fur in one of my sets I automatically think mink rather than muskrat
