I graduated from high school in 1963, I don't recall hearing anything about being able to carry a phone in your pocket.

Wow I was 2 days old the date of the page
if you think about it 1963 we had smaller and smaller radios the receiver end could fit in your pocket , very shortly you could get a motorola vhf on a belt and radio telephone patch was starting to happen
touch tone technology was also happening.
battery technology is a large part of what made early cell phones so large
the first Cell phone call was made in 1973 by Motorola so not unrealistic to think they were conceptualizing in 63 the brick phone was released in 1983
then it was a matter of building network, opening up frequencies and battery technology to make it so you really could have a motorola flip-ish phone that fit in your pocket in 1989

In '62, I belonged to a sportsman club and the club had an old guy raising quail and each year each member received 10 quail to turn loose in their area. At that time our telephone coop was formed and was getting right-of-way easements, etc. to lay lines and was replacing the overhead lines for the old wooden crank phones (which we never had). Part of the general conversation the day my dad took me to get my quail was about the new phones. The old man raising the quail said that some day phones would have pictures on them so you could see who you was talking to. He said that would be a good thing because it would cause the old women to put some clothes on before getting on the phone. I've often thought about that prophecy.
