Hopefully, If I get to go it will be in Nevada watching the first come first served tags, I got a cow tag off it last year and filled it so hoping for a repeat.

I’m not, but please for those that do, take plenty of pics and keep notes of the hunt. Once y’all are back to civilization I want a huge write up with pics…and make me feel like I’m there!! And pics of the country you’re hunting along with the elk.

Yea I will be. Hoping to make it 5 elk in five years after this fall. Speaking of which I should load up some 338 win mag shells some day soon

Nope, tried again for a Kansas bull tag but didn't draw one. So I added another preference point to the bucket. Maybe one of these days.

Re: Anybody going elk hunting this Fall? - 08/18/22 01:59 AM

Didn't get my controlled tags this year --- so I am trying to decide if I will go general season or just make an extended deer season. General elk ends about the time trapping starts so not sure I will be ready for either.

Re: Anybody going elk hunting this Fall? - 08/18/22 02:37 AM

Last time I went, I had to lead my horse to a rock to stump jus to get back in the saddle. Mountain hunting is a younger man’s game. And a skinnier man’s game as well. Sure is fun though.

Sure hoping so. Leaving Friday for work then be home hopefully around September 2nd and start trying with the bow while on R&R. Been a few years since I got one.

Anyone here familiar with the significance of south pass, and the green river country. Especially to the history of fur trading in America?

Yup, I try and put one in the freezer every year. Didn't get one year before last, first time I hadn't killed one in quite a few years. I guide for elk so I'm busy guiding pretty much all of the season around here, but there is an area down south that has a late rifle season. Been going down there the last few years, not as good of elk hunting, but a fun area to hunt and the season dates work out to give me time to hunt. Used to hunt a more local area that had a five day longer season than where I'm guiding, so I got the last five days and the couple days I have off between hunters, but the other area gives me up to 11 days and a trip with the wife, also some decent mule deer hunting there at the same time.

I'm not able to get out there this fall, but I've had some success in Idaho before. The area we hunt is beautiful but brutal. Crazy steep terrain and thick cover. Success rates for archery are in the single digits, so I was pretty fortunate to have called in this guy. He popped up over the ridge at 45 yards and I buried an arrow into his adam's apple. He only went about 150 yards, but as I was following the blood trail I had a MONSTER bull come out of the alders - bugling and then destroying a small tree - all within 40 yards of me.

It was amazing.

I've heard people try to compare turkey hunting with elk hunting as there can be so much interaction and calling involved with both. Yeah, it's the same thing - to the extent that a 20-ish pound chicken walking up to you can produce the same overwhelming experience that a 750 pound bull elk can. Until you've been close to one, you cannot imagine how large they are and how loud they are.

Best of luck to those of you who are lucky enough to be hunting them this year. I'll be back out west next fall.

Re: Anybody going elk hunting this Fall? - 08/18/22 02:30 PM

Yes, we hunt mainly private now, we work for a rancher, but hunt on NF during archery season.
We have limited bull hunting access but can hunt cow elk for months and have run of the place.

Have taken a couple of good bulls on the property, the best was a wounded bull.
We have taken a bunch of cows off the place.

All Wyoming elk. Our cow tags are basically OTC because of the lack of private access in the area. We can get 2 cow tags and a bull tag.

My wounded bull and some cows.

Good luck this fall.

Yessir. Our rifle season starts Sept 17 for bulls but I prefer to eat cows. As far as I'm concerned they are the best table fare there is. My season don't start for my cow tag until Nov 1 and is good til Dec 20. I usually shoot a elk a year unless work gets in the way.

Re: Anybody going elk hunting this Fall? - 08/19/22 02:48 AM

Those 210's are deadly poison for elk. I used to use a 338 win mag but I've started using my 26 nos with 142 lrab's and it work pretty good to.

Good moisture in our mountains right now and it's been down into the 40s at night here in town.
Which part of Wyoming?

Burn scar up above town got a huge rain and some debris flow last Saturday.
