So is everyone finding ammo they need ?

Re: Ammo < not a joke > - 09/02/22 10:59 PM

Mostly, but the prices are stupid high.

I'd like to find some 2 1/2" #4 .410 for around $8 a box or less.

For the most part, yes. Like said, pricy.

Primers are still a little tough to get but. I have all I "need" but would not mind more. having said that, I have but a hand full of empty brass in all calibers. Got the lot filled up again.

Walmart today said no limits so I bought 4 boxes of 50 trellis of cci least round nose standard velocity just becuse they had a limit of 3 for so long. I would have bought the 500 cci min mags they had but they were round nose cover plated not hp. I will just order what I want in .22lr cheaper in that area.

I have 18 243 rounds left in Hornady north American whitetail left. Have not seen it anywhere.

Actually saw more in Walmart last week than I have in years!
30.05, 30/30, 6.5CM, 7mm mag, .308, etc.
Full shelf of .22.

Allore than I'm willing to.spend, at least at this time.

No primers. No 410 in any configuration. Very little less popular caliber ammo here. All stupid high.

At that price I will shoot barns 80 gr all copper at 3300+ fps and not get lead fragments in my meat. I'm just lazy and don't want to re zero or build a new bench at my farm and start loading them.

It's nice to hear some are out there maybe they will filter in around me at closer to $25 a box but I'm not holding my breath.

You best bet is order them. They are hit and miss at the normal on line retailers. Lately small rifle has been available along with small pistol. In cci. Large rifl I hav not seen in a few weeks. Prices are about 100 per 1000 pluss hazmat though.

I made that call about year and a half ago. Went from absolutely nothing to no longer have to worry about it for as long as I'm alive. Stuff is now out there to roll your own, and in abundance. Primers, powder, bullets, shot......all of it.

Re: Ammo < not a joke > - 09/03/22 01:35 AM

Aside from .22 and 2 3/4" 12 gauge I reload my own rifle ammo. If I had to by my ammo finding .222 Reminton would be very difficult to find these days. Besides having my own brass in .222 I was able to get 400 new primed cases of Winchester brass at a good price. The company was selling them 200 cases per bag. I also stocked up on small rifle primers, so I am good for any rifle ammo I shoot. Glad my dad taught me how to reload. Glad I paid attention.

Folks go to Walmart. They have a lot of ammo, my local one had more ammo than every sporting goods store combined. Ammoseek can be your friend if you are not supporting the local shop. Also recommend reloading, Ive switched my hunting bullets to all bonded and copper only. 6.8 SPC, 20 gauge, 5.7 and my 50 cal muzzle loader.

Walmart have Federal 20ga #8s and 7 1/2s
Had to pull the trigger on the only 2 boxes at Wally World ... 20 ga 1oz lead #6s = $19/box. All shotgun shells limited to 3, unlimited on everything else.

Been able to find everything from 17 HRM to 300 Win Mag that I need except 22-250 and large rifle primers.

Re: Ammo < not a joke > - 09/03/22 11:57 AM

There is a good article about the ongoing ammo shortage in the current issue of the Pennsylvania Game News. They spoke with a bunch of ammo industry bigwigs and, in a nutshell, ammunition manufacturers have recovered from Covid shortages in materials and labor and are cranking out more ammo than ever before. Hornady production is up 30%, Sig Sauer expanded its Arkansas plant last year and Ammo Inc. broke ground on a new ammo plant last June in Wisconsin. Vista Outdoor, parent company of Federal, Hevi-Shot, Remington and Speer is running 24/7 to meet customer demands.

They all agree that the unprecedented spike in ammunition demand has been and still is the issue. They point to the 21 million new guns Americans bought in 2020. 2.3 million of those guns were sold in March of that year alone.

An NSSF survey showed about 40% of those 21 million gun buyers were first time firearm owners. If each one of those 8.4 million people bought one 50-round box of ammunition, that comes out to more than 420 million rounds. If all 21 million bought just one box of 50, that comes to over 1 billion rounds. And that’s a conservative estimate of demand.

They talked about the shortages getting better and ammunition becoming more available but, mentioned that popular hunting gauges and calibers remain hard to come by. And the reason for that is that more than half of the firearms sold in any given year are handguns. And they’re bought largely for recreational target shooting and self-defense. The ammo makers have been cranking out what’s been in greatest demand and that has been 9 mm, .45, .380 and .22. That’s why the availability of hunting rifle calibers has been slower to catch up.

They expect some ammunition is going to continue to be scarce probably throughout the fall but it’s not going to be as bad as it was the last couple of years. They did say that you can expect to pay more for it. Most ammo companies used to raise prices once a year and then only by 2% to 3% to keep up with the cost of living. By comparison several ammo makers increased prices for times in the past 18 months generally by about 10 to 15% each time. That’s why a box of 30-06 once selling for $20 is now $28.

The predictions are that prices will remain high as long as the demand remains high. The folks interviewed generally agreed that prices would begin to drop sometime late next year as the supply slowly catches up with the demand. But, prices are never again going to be where they were 3 to 4 years ago.

No Varget powder, accubonds, or large rifle primers to be found in these parts.
Posted By: HayDay

Re: Ammo < not a joke > - 09/03/22 12:53 PM

In past year, have had numerous chances to buy Varget.........including an 8 pounder that I left on the shelf for the blammo blasters. If wanting something to go BANG, and willing to be flexible, this is said to be a near 100% drop in replacement for Varget. I have 2 pounds to try.

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1020431551?pid=454236

A month or so back, was in Iowa and happened to be driving in area of Brownell's, so went in to check on things. Compared to online stuff, retail store major dissapointment, but did have both 1 and 8 pounders of Red Dot and Green Dot, and what floored me, a counter full of primers.......Cheddite 209 and bricks in all sizes of Remington, including 9 1/2 LRP. Cheddite 209 shotgun primers turning up all over. I got some at a local gun store.

This was found at Graf's retail store a few weeks back. Point being, if you know where to look, it's out there.

I just returned from Anchorage where I checked four different stores. A grand total of three pounds of some nondescript powder and zero primers anywhere

Re: Ammo < not a joke > - 09/03/22 06:04 PM

I've been looking for some Benchmark powder that I would like to try in my new .20. Haven't seen any, I did bid a ridiculous price for one pound on Gunbroker, not that desperate yet. I have plenty of other stuff.

Large rifle primers are fairly rare yet.

I was in Scheels this morning. All centerfire was on sale, 3 bucks a box off anything 34.99 and under and 6 bucks if above that. 10 percent off all rimfire and pistol.

No 8 dollar a box .410.

I finally found ammo 2 weeks ago.
It isnt cheap.
I have my kids and myself stocked for the upcoming seasons finally.
7mm-08 was very hard to get.
I also reload and primers are tough to find.
Shotgun shell prices are nuts.

When all the talking and speculating is finished the most precious metal anyone can have is lead With lead anyone that has gold or silver or anything with value will have a fair chance of keeping the other valuable items that he has And at the same time could use some of their ammo to trade for other important items .

Re: Ammo < not a joke > - 09/06/22 04:44 PM

Don't even bother to look at Walmart here, all they ever have is some shotgun shells and maybe some FMJ 308. Haven't seen 12 guage turkey loads in 3 years, either 3 inch or 3 1/2. I reload all my centerfire ammo except shotgun which I never shoot except a couple rounds for turkeys. Primers are hard to find, especially large rifle, I have lots of primers in everything but large rifle magnum, which I am out of. You can find bullets in most any diameter to fit the bore of whatever you have if you look, but good luck finding a specific bullet you are looking for. Bullets aren't bad to order online (no hazmat) but you better be looking every morning if you ever expect to get a specific one. Most stores have a few pounds of powder on the shelf, but I only go to town every month or two, and never see any of the powders that I normally use.
I used to enjoy playing around with reloading, experimenting with different loads, different bullets and powders. Now not so much, you can never find anything you want to try on the shelf. On the plus side I have partial boxes of lots of bullets and different powders, so I can usually always load up something that will go bang through all my guns. Have had to switch away from a favorite load or two for lack of components, but I can still shoot the guns.

Actually guided a couple hunters last year from back east who bought new rifles, specifically in calibers that there was ammo on the shelf for, because they couldn't find ammo for their regular rifle and they were out.

I have bullets that have been on backorder since February , I want them if they ever show up but wonder if they ever will.

midway doesn't bill you till they ship. but they do cancel your order if it makes it a year without any coming in stock.
