chipmunk trap

Folks,

I have a huge problem with a chipmunk destroying my garden. This post will focus on using a snap trap from Walmart. it is sold as a rat trap and seems strong enough.
Problem is 70% of time bait gets eaten without engaging. maybe 25% trap fired, but no catch and I only got a mouse once.
Please, advise what bait to use and how to setup. I am showing pics. I can squeeze the bait receptacle jaw to hold the bait.
What you see now is a raisin in the receptacle and trap is set against backing.




Today is the first time I try a raisin. I have used smeared peanut butter before and once salami.

Victor large pan rat snaps

Make some double ended weasel boxes. Bait with fruit and nut bird seed mix trailed in and WCS squirrel paste. Set on location and travel routes. Chippies love running edges.

When that doesn't work, get a decent Victor rat trap. The trigger on that style is 'bout worthless.

My wife has live trapped and relocated close to 30 of them in a small cage trap, made by wickencamps I think. Moves them a few miles out of town to large timber area by a river where they can mess with the deer hunters instead of digging her plants and undermining our cement. They're just too cute to wack them. lol

Screw the trap vertically to a post with the trigger about 4-6 inches off the ground so they have to stand to get the bait. Deadly!

This is the style the others are talking about.

this one is even worse than the big one. I have it and it cannot catch even mice. it is too weak and the chipmunk/rat will escape even if trapped.

This is the same size as the other one, rat sized, not mouse sized. They make them in two sizes. This is the M326 model, made for big rats.

Here they are side by side...

Super glue a kernel of corn or an almond to the trigger. They get all snatchy when they can't gingerly steal the bait.

that is great , my neighbor would use suet and set 4 traps pans facing the center to up his odds of getting a catch
those little buggers are good at getting it cleaned out

Super glue a kernel of corn in the Pan. Smear your bait over it. They can lick the bait but the chewing vibration sets off the Trap

Also LTs black walnut bait is deadly

I drill a hole in a kernel of corn and use light wire to wire it to the trigger, works for mice also. I have used a half peanut too just pushing the wire through it but the corn lasts a lot longer.

a five-gallon bucket 3/4 full of water, cover top of water with sunflower seeds they will jump in to get seed and drown, had a call chipmunk eating tomatoes, got 18 chips the first night in three buckets. customer was happy

Use the victor large pan snap trap. I take an acorn and drill a small hole in it. Then I take some fine wire and wire it to the pan.

The weasel box with the yellow pan rat trap works great on chipmunks and the little red/pine squirrels.

This is what I have had the most success with also. I smear peanut butter on the pan and sprinkle sunflower seeds into it. I have also used the "old maids" from popping popcorn with equally good results. A couple years ago, I caught 26 chipmunks around the outside of my garage with this setup and also caught many more mice than that at the same time.
Being in an enclosed box also prevents non-targets like birds from being caught.

Yup, I killed several wrens with the open traps. Even got a few in my small havahart. They really get around in some sneaky places.
I like wrens. Hated smacking a few.

can you point to a video on how to build that? I want to see how to setup a reliable DIY trap.
I built one cage trap but the animal was escaping somehow. I did not have a latching mechanism, so if it was smart enough to lift the door then that was how it escaped.

I always figured that you had other uses for the "Old Maid's".

Wrap string around the trigger and let the peanut butter soak into the string. Teeth + string = DEAD
