Limit with the New .410

Limit with the New .410 - 09/12/22 02:20 PM

Won a .410 over/under at the SD convention this weekend. Took it out and limited out last night. Walked 5.5 miles but got all three the last 25-30 yards of walking. About how that typically goes haha.

Cool. What make and model of gun is it?

Me and my pup did a dove limit here on opening day with my new Yildiz Legacy HP in 410.

I have a similar gun. I've had it for a few years. It'll get the job done. I really like mine.

I normally don't point out other people's typos but I'm sure you meant 20g. It should be a side-by-side with twin triggers but the uncouth still walk among us.

That's some good shooting with the .410 btw.

I was eyeing a fancy o/u similar to that one A couple months ago at the grocery, hardware and sporting goods store. I figured if 5 bills buys it, it was going home with me.

It was still there when I left. frown

My grandfather started taking me hunting when I turned 12. He always hunted with an old beat up Stevens 59A bolt action 410 . I t did not look petty but he killed a lot of squirrels with it

Re: Limit with the New .410 - 09/12/22 07:41 PM

Are you guys using tss with the .410 or just regular 3 inch lead?
Posted By: ~ADC~

Re: Limit with the New .410 - 09/12/22 07:46 PM

Regular lead for me. 3" - #6 or 7.5 for pheasants, 2 1/2" #4's for rabbits ... ideally.

#8 for quail...

He's grown a little since then. I wish there were quail around these days.

Stevens single shot, Mossburg O/U.

where are you guys finding shells

Re: Limit with the New .410 - 09/12/22 09:19 PM

They are out there if you're willing to pay big bucks for them. I'm not. I bought them before they were hard to find and over priced. I'll wait and see when and if they ever become available for a reasonable price.

Nice hunts guys. Have a little HnR .410. I shot a lot of my first ducks with that gun many years ago and still carry now for a quick grouse hunt.

A buddy has a Stoeger I've been drooling over for a long time. The fit and finish is amazing for what he paid for it. Beavertail forearm is the only thing wrong with it. That should be illegal.

I usually couldnt get close enough to any chickens to shoot them with a 10 ga. I tried.......... many times.

I really like hunting with 410s. Glad to see people like them as well. I never had anything fancy. But started with a single shot 410.

I’m wanting a smaller gauge gun. Actually want several, lol. Want an semi 20 and a .410 or 28ga O/U just to have fun with on a dove shoot. We have a few dove hunts, but most are actual shoots. A little .410 or 28ga would be a hoot on those shoots.

Local gun show had 410 shells for $30 a box. I didn't buy any.

Shot a coyote with one many years ago. He came running by at about 20 feet while I was on stand waiting for the pushers pheasant hunting. 3" 7 1/2 shot rolled him right up.

Re: Limit with the New .410 - 09/13/22 12:58 AM

I love my 410’s. I started off with a cheap Charles Daly 410 O/U and just fell in love with the light, easy handling, and low recoil. I splurged and bought a Beretta 687 Silver Pigeon III earlier this spring and boy does it handle and shot nice. With some choke and shot experimentation they can perform nicely both in the field and on the sporting clays course even with the 2.5” shell. I keep a little Mossberg 500 410 pump around camp for critter control at $250 pre craziness it was a bargain. I want to add a 410 sxs to the mix and have been looking hard at the Yildiz but I don’t have an Academy sporting goods close by yet to handle one.

Re: Limit with the New .410 - 09/13/22 11:44 AM

My grandfather was in his 70's when I started hunting His legs where giving him problems so he did not care to do a lot of walking .His idea of hunting at that time was to find a squirrel den tree and sit and wait . The season bag limit then was 30 .He usually was able to kill the season limit every year .One year we where squirrel hunting .And as usual we sat near a den tree and waited for daylight .He killed 1 or 2 and about 9 AM he said let's go back to the car .As we walked through the woods a nice ringneck pheasant flushed and he shot and dropped it stone dead .He was so excited to have taken a nice rooster. We cleaned it and did not find a single shot in it .I guess a single shot had hit it the head .Because the body was completely shot free .I was maybe 14 at he time .I REMEMBER IT LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY . But it was more than 50 years ago .NOW I AM JUST GLAD I CAN REMEMBER IT AT ALL.

Having the dog makes it 10x more fun to be out there now. She just turned two and is on here second season. Last fall during Thanksgiving, she tore her ACL and had surgery in December. Been a long road to recovery with a lot less offseason training than the year before. Not doing too bad thus far. Just have to keep her healthy.
She is a lab/border collie cross with a never-ending drive.

Agreed If you spend even a little time hunting over a dog after that it almost does not feel like hunting when hunting without one. .A dog that listens and obeys commands is all you need Dogs help to find more game and find and retrieve game that is hit .And most dogs want to please their master so their enthusiasm makes the whole experience more enjoyable
