I have a bunch of 22’s. Most of the time for hunting I grab my 10-22 with a fixed 4 power scope

I mostly use a .410. Some of my favorite squirrel timbers have a lot of houses close by so it's safer to use the little scatter gun.

Savage 93 BTVS, Heavy Barrel, with a Vortex Diamond Back 4-12x40. Left hand bolt. Love it my son got ti for me for Christmas. Never had a left-hand 22 before.
it is heavy but a tack driver and great to shoot at home.

20 Guage. Full choked and 3" 4/5 shot. Go back and forth between my revelation 325a and rem 870 pump. Habeba few 22s but by thr time the leaves drop for the 22 im deer hunting or trapping

I have a Remington 550 model 22 with 4X scope, that I bought used when I was I believe a freshman in high school??? Anyways that was my go to squirrel gun for many years. I also bought a Browning Challenger 22 pistol to carry for squirrels while bow hunting. I've shot a lot of squirrels with both those guns.
When they came out with 17HMR I bought a Marlin bull barrel in 17 HMR. I have a variable power Bushnell scope on it. That gun has been what I shot most my squirrel with since I bought it. I have made head shots on squirrels out to 65 yards. Yes I had a range finder and that was not a Guesstimation. The gun is a tack driver and if I ever had a chance I'm pretty sure I could head shoot a squirrel easily at 100 yards. The little 17 cal ballistic tips are not meat freindly if you take body shots.

Mostly My 32 cal TC Seneca. But occasionally I will use my Marlin 39A with a scope or if I want to hunt like I did when I was a kid I pull out my Rem 552 that I bought when I was a kid.

If I were to buy a .22 for squirrel it would be a Marlin model 60 most likely. That's what I used growing up. Now I have several ugly black plastic .22s I've won in raffles so just grab one of them.

When hunting with dogs with the leaves still on, I use my Remington model 31 20 gauge. I'm not as hardcore as Sniper though, I just use 2 3/4" #6 shot, lol.

Pellet guns are great. They don't fly far compared to a .22 rim fire. .22 or .25 caliber pellet gun.

Marlin 39a, savage 64, cz 455 scout, 2 other Marlin youth bolt .22's and a few 10/22s are our squirrel guns. Most scoped with a Leopold or Burris. No shot gunning them for us. I don't like crawl offs or the noise + shot is hard on the teeth.

While I don't shoot much anymore, I have had many guns over the rears but would see nothing wrong with the ones I started out with. First 22 stevens my grandpa bought from Sears Robuck catalog for $2.50. Used it for my first on a lot of things including hogs. It has a nail for a firing pin. My next was a Stevens 410 that was my dads he traded some geese for and the one in the picture was my Great Grandpas Ranger double barrel 12 with hammers. All of which I still have.
While I have a better assortment today I wouldn't hesitate to use any of them if in a bind.

Suppressed Ruger American .22 with Nikon 3-9x40EFR and Remington Subsonics. I'll have to switch to CCI subsonics when I run out because you can't find the Remingtons anymore in the brick and the last time I bought them in the hard plastic pack they didn't perform well at all.

There is nothing like the sound of a headshot with a suppressed .22. 39 victims for me so far this year, just had our first annual squirrel fry/hunt last weekend.

Well, the one I had before all my guns fell in the river and were lost was a 22 over / .410 under Stevens.

Remington 541-S with a 3x9, Remington 121 Fieldmaster open sights, Winchester 69A Target with the factoty #80 peep sight, Ruger American 17HMR with a 3x9, S&W K17 open sights, S&W Model 41 with an open sight barrel and a barrel with a red dot, and last but not the least a S&W Model 14 38 special which is probably my favorite squirrel zapper. They are all good but the 14 is phenominal with a 130 grain bullet I cast myself and CFE Pistol powder.

17 mach 2. Scary accurate, flat shooting, no ricochet.

Until my 36 flintlock gets finished, I've been using a 20 gage smoothbore flintlock. Equal load powder and shot out of an open cylinder, 48 inch barrel.

4/5 shot doesn't put too many pellets in the squirrel. Actually ran into an issue with some shells that by design had half the pellet count of normal shells, never using those again unless its for point blank stuff. Unless i get one inside 10 yards then the pattern is about the size of a tennis ball...

Lot of nice squirrel guns. The Cooper in M2 is one I always wanted. Passed on the. M2 craze and surprised the cal did not last. But I bought a 541-T when the first came out and they did not last.either. Never could understand the big money spent on deer rifles when you shoot a few times a year. But why not spend same money for a squirrel rifle at least in Mo you can shoot tree rats from end of May till Jan 15 th. Hope I don’t upset any big game hunters. You also like your sport and I respect that.

While on the topic of squirrel guns...I'm thinking about getting a rifle for hunting squirrels and was wondering what you guys favorite rimfire round for treerats is? I'm really considering .17 hmr, but is that too much gun for them?

All we have in my area are fox squirrels, 10/22 for me as well.

I use the same one I've used for 45 years. It's a Marlin "Golden 60" just a model 60 with a gold color tube and trigger. I did put a 3X9 scope on it for my old eyes. Shoots straight.

Just a old Marlin 25 bolt, open sights.

I got a Remington single shot rifle from my father in law 40 years ago. No scope but one of the more accurate rifles I have shot. Don't shoot many but I get some good ones every year. We have nice big eastern fox tails here and they are bigger and easier to hit.

Wish we had those big fat Fox Squirrels like some of you guys have.We have Greys ,Blacks and Reds.

Fox squirrel's are almost gone around here. Used to have more fox than greys. Greys travel more, which is why you more greys smashed on the roads. Hardly ever see a fox squirrel in the road when we did have more. Plus it doesn't help that fox squirrels tend to let you walk right up to them so they were overhunted because they were easiwr and provided more meat.

I’m the odd one, early season I grab a CZ 12 gauge S x S bobwhiteG2 and for the late season 10/22 4x12x40 scope, sometimes I grab NEF SS-one singleshot 4x32 scope .

I shot so many squirrels with a Marlin Model 60 that I can't change now. If my grandpa ever thought I shot so poorly as to take up a shot gun he would have pretended he didn't know me. If he pocketed 3 .22 shells he was either bringing back 3 squirrel or 2 squirrel and 1 unfired round.

Sako 94s .22 LR is my main squirrel rifle. Also have an Anschutz 22 that was my dad's and a Ruger 77/22. Very rarely hunt with a shotgun anymore. Hunt a little with my ruger slabside government competition 22 pistol

Yep. I've killed a pick-up truck load of squirrels through the years with that rig.
You don't even have to get fancy on the scope if you don't want to.
Forty dollar 4X scope from Wal-Mart will do. More expensive scope will be clearer and let in more light though.
Squirrel head accuracy at 30 yrds is plenty good enough.

Same around here. I rarely shoot a fox squirrel anymore and 20 years ago they outnumbered the grays here.

Mine is a Limited Edition, has the gold trigger with a "coin" inlay in the stock. I think I got it in 1992ish for Christmas.

You must of been on the naughty list or Santa would of brought you a 10/22 instead of a jam-o-matic model 60.

I have a question for the “I shotgun them when the leaves are on folks”?
Are you shooting squirrels through the leaves when you can’t see them? I’ve never understood this reasoning for shotgunning squirrels early season. You still gotta be able to see them when you pull the trigger correct?
Ruger 77-22 for me. Not a fan of semiauto’s.

this is just my take on that , they shot gun them with the leaves on , not because they shoot through the leaves but because they can better hit them running up a trunk or when they pop out and run down a limb for 10 feet
they shotgun them because it is faster for the brief moment they are visible and the squirrel is relatively close and frequently moving.
they don't need them to stop , just shoot them like a bird.

I rarely shoot one anymore, but I might be the only one on here that uses a .22 mag. I've shot plenty with regular .22's but the Marlin .22 mag I have is super accurate.

Must be a Texas thing. I was talking about that with my father n law on Sunday. Nobody hunts squirrels around here anymore. I am surprise nobody mentions the Nylon 22.

I tried one I took in on trade for a setter pup for a while. I thought it was a bit to much damage for me. Much less than a 223 with 45gr hp though. Now that left a small hole in and out but the impact gutted them. Shot 5 behind the shoulder from 80 yards every one had the guts hanging out but no meat damage.
