I'm at 30F, 5:45 am Couple miles south of West Branch Mi. Pulled most tomatoes last night, about 1/2 bushel, covered only 2 plants out of 40, trying to get another week or so. Also covered one very productive green bell pepper that is loaded down, 1 week is all it needs. Ccncord grapes are getting sweet, hopefully knocked back the coons a month ago when they was hitting my tomatoes.

We have 42 here this morning, but I would not call it uncommon in our area to have frost this early.

The average killing frost for the Soo Foo, SD airport is around Oct 6. Climatic "averages" are based on 30-year intervals of time, these intervals are updated every ten years. The current one appears to be 1991-2020.

The earliest I can remember was as a pre-driving teen in the later 1970s. That was around Sept 16. We had gone on a fishing trip about 70 miles further north. The minnow bucket had ice on top the water both mornings we were there. The latest I remember (not at the current house which is further away from an "urban heat island" location) was sometime in the first week of November. My first married house was in more of the central area of Soo Foo so the latent heat in the urban surfaces helped us escape a couple of cold nights (it frosted at the airport) in October. The green tomatoes in my backyard garden did nothing during that extra month of "growing" days as it was generally considerably below 70 degrees for highs.

35 here in Houghton Lake this A.M. I remember back in '75 and it snowing heavy in the western U.P. on September 12th. I had shot a bear the evening before and was quite happy with the cool weather, even happier the night before when I had to back out and leave the blood trail until daylight! Luckily the snow didn't show until after I'd recovered the bruin.

24 degrees here this morning 7 hours below freezing and working on 8. I live at 4,600 feet elevation, my nice green fall cow feed probably just got hammered lots of fog and dew maybe some will live.
