Lacking two sill jacks, spacing is incorrect, (should be a trimmer all the way to the bottom plate supporting header), "header" is totally inadequate, insulation is so poorly done it may as well not be there, code requires that Romex be stapled within six inches of the box.

I wonder what other nightmares are hiding behind the insulation ?

I’ll add the insulation is installed wrong as well.

That would have failed on several issues around here! Building inspector would have had a hayday with it!

If the color on the wire shielding is white then it is 14 gauge. Our inspectors down here on the coast would have just turned around and walked out. Ok so wrong size wire, spacing incorrect, header inadequate and missing cripples, if I'm looking at the photo correctly there is no cap plate on that outside wall, insulation is wrong, down here it's missing hurricane straps, I'd like to see how the sheet rocker is going to deal with the way the window is installed, he's gonna have issues with the stud spacing as well, on second thought I thing there is a cap plate but I'm wondering whats going on with the ceiling joist to get the sheet rock that low or it could be just loose hanging down. It actually looks like a mobile home re do.

Stachybotrys black mold on the insulation too.

You used to be able to get 12awg with white sheathing. There also should be nail plates where the Romex goes through the studs.

Still, built better than many in tornado alley and hurricane zones.
Ever take apart a mobile home ?

Re: Someone failed framing 101 - 10/01/22 08:30 PM

I was hired to put egress windows in a 4 plex in Wasilla many years ago. There wasn’t 1 stud that I found when I opened the walls up. The studs were scabbed together short pieces of 2X4’s. The builder had I think it was over 30 buildings he had built and every time a big wind would come up a roof or 2 would let go. As I remember he finally was ran out of town!

I built my hunting cabin. It is warm and dry and looks pretty good. It would definitely not pass code. I admit it.

probably would have been better built if it had been our building construction instructor in HS wouldn't let anything out the door that wasn't right

you might see where it got pulled and re-nailed or an oddly cut piece of sheathing but lack of support or nails wasn't going to get out the door

they taught building construction making garden sheds

Re: Someone failed framing 101 - 10/02/22 01:29 PM

Well, besides structural weakness (no headers) on a load bearing wall, etc., the window itself appears to be a slider window turned sideways to act as a double hung window (??)

you can't tell if there is a header or not behind the insulation. its a DH window not a slider from the looks of the sash locks. could be on a gable wall with trusses thus no bearing needed

Re: Someone failed framing 101 - 10/02/22 06:50 PM

What I want to know is why is the wall opened up, remodel or what?

Yup. There are a lot of guys that can buy a truck load of tools but only a few are carpenters.

That is true that you can't tell if there is a header behind that insulation or not. But what we know for certain is that there are no 'trimmers' or cripples supporting a header if there is one hidden behind the insulation. We can see that there are only two full studs from the top plate to the bottom. Nothing to support a hidden header

Looks like the window was added later . Probably from the outside only

Original stud spacing was correct until Joe homeowner came along ?
