Re: Bear weight? - 10/02/22 07:18 PM

I'm not doubting that some folks can accurately estimate a bear's weight, but I sure don't know how they do it.
I have little experience with black bears, however if that were a brown bear I'd have to say; "not a huge bear since I can see a lot of daylight under it's belly". Of course maybe that rule of thumb doesn't apply to black bears; that bear does look to be a nice bear though.

400ish.

Size of head compared to size of ears help to tell small from large bears.

Re: Bear weight? - 10/02/22 07:31 PM

charles and waggler have very good points, I would guess that bear in the two to three hundred weight class.

Re: Bear weight? - 10/02/22 07:38 PM

I would say pushing 300. Like said prior, "a lot of daylight under him". He is a good bear, you can put me on that stand.

Long, boar, 350-400, Capricorn, likes, almonds, and long walks in the oaks.

Re: Bear weight? - 10/02/22 08:02 PM

I say 225 tops closer to 190. Only thing I see to scale off of is the apples.

Re: Bear weight? - 10/02/22 08:06 PM

yes a very long bear I'm guessing 350-400

Nothing else in picture to compare it to.

Re: Bear weight? - 10/02/22 09:07 PM

Fairly stout legs. Pics with no reference are tough to judge. Does have some bulge to his belly.
I’ve killed 3 bear over 300 lbs. weighed ungutted. One other weighed 348 lbs. field dressed.
I’m thinking he will go at least 300.
I have a hog video on my phone, but I’ve never been able to post anything on here from my iphone.

Re: Bear weight? - 10/02/22 09:27 PM

400 minimum. Look at the size of his head ears and neck. A keeper in my book.

Re: Bear weight? - 10/02/22 09:52 PM

Hard to judge off a picture. He is big and doesn't have any hair. I'm honestly surprised (and impressed) by the guesses here. Most people WAY overestimate a bears weight. My rule of thumb is when someone tells me they seen a bear and give me an estimated weight I divide it in half and figure that as a high estimate. Not that much different when someone shoots one and gives me an estimated weight. In this case though, with the caveat that it is hard to judge off a picture, I would guess 250-275. He is a definite shooter, I look at right around a hundred bears a year (usually a little over) and will be able to count the ones that look like that on my fingers.

180-220#. Belly ain't no where near the ground like the 400+ bears do.

Re: Bear weight? - 10/02/22 11:01 PM

Deep head, thick legs, deep shoulders and hinds.

400 all day.

How's about just shootin' and showing us a pic of him on a scale ?? wink

Re: Bear weight? - 10/02/22 11:19 PM

4 bills I think? He has a broad blocky muzzle (age) thick neck, solid legs all the way down.
Sometimes a lean food year doesn’t give them much of a belly, some years the other way.

Anyone else notice what almost looks like fur scarring from a snare around the neck, third picture.
I could be wrong.

Re: Bear weight? - 10/02/22 11:25 PM

I would think that skull will measure closer to 18 than 17 inches.

Re: Bear weight? - 10/03/22 03:03 AM

Nah, it's just them southern bears, they all look like they have mange or just joined the Marines and had their hair shaved. Makes them look funny to those of us who are used to seeing bears either with hair or if they are rubbed out they have that mohawk down their back.

Some of the southern ones do seem to have short hair, like this one.

Re: Bear weight? - 10/03/22 12:00 PM

Yep. That’s a beauty. And judging bear size is difficult if your not a bear hunter. There’s a lotta ground shrinkage. A local outfitter took over 40 bear around here this spring. Most weren’t shooters but after advice from the guides saying to wait (“we’ll see bear every time we sit”) the customer still shot.
As long as they’re happy I guess.

350-400. Nice big boar.

For those commenting about the ears, I'll just say that ears don't weigh much.

^^^^^^ Agree.

I would really like to know how many XXX pound bears actually ever get put on a scale; I'll bet a very small percentage.
Here is a picture of a 400 pound bear that was tranquilized and put on a scale in Los Angeles.

Re: Bear weight? - 10/03/22 06:34 PM

We weight everyone in Pa. Our camp has shot 23 bear the biggest 520 lb 465 lb and 435 lb.
I have seen one that weighted 675 lb live weight. Most of the big bear are feeding in corn fields
or potatoes fields. But some years we have a good mast crop!

After seeing that pic by waggler, I guess I have no idea about bear weights...I would have guessed close to 600 instead of 400

Thanks for all the replies. Maybe I can get him hung up on a scale.

Re: Bear weight? - 10/04/22 12:14 AM

(no disrespect intended) Wagglers bear pic is of a short fat sow. Totally different body structure. Cannot compare the two. Boars are built different than sows longer. I have been in bear camp at my buddy's since 1983 every year, shot dozen's myself and my family even more. Many over 400.

I remember hunting grain fields for bear.
They would do some real damage to a ripe grain field over night.
Stand on their hind legs and scoop the grain heads in to their mouths.
You never forget bear sign in a grain field.
