Porkies

I am not one to go along with blasting every Porcupine on sight. I actually think they are neat critters, even had a pet porky as a kid once. These 4 were gnawing on things that they shouldn't have been gnawing on. Also, I generally save their meat when I do end up killing one. These were blazed yesterday. Any other porky eaters on here? FYI, I have pulled literally hundreds of quills from my own dogs muzzles and etc., but I still don't understand how some folks hate them so much.

Don’t hate them persay but after having to put down a dog due to being blinded by one now when they come on or within sight of my property they die, if I wanted to I could kill a dozen just about every day around here,


Many of the farmers around here kill them on sight because if you want fun try having to pull quills out of the nose and face of a 500 pound calf that got to curious for their own good, or it’s mama that’s something you don’t want to do more then once, I once had to do that for a brood sow, she was penned up but that porky went in looking for salt on the fence boards which are another issue, the damage they do to animal pens ect can be a problem if they are made of wood that cAn soak up sweat that draws them into chewing them to destruction or weaken to the point the pen is useless, and that can happen in an amazingly short time

I like porkies too, but I end up taking out a half-dozen or so every year. We have two apple trees, and they can do quite a bit of damage. I do everything I can to discourage their destructive habits, but it almost always ends up the same -- a twenty-foot drop to the ground.

Once they start up a tree there's no way to stop them from climbing. If I had video of me trying to keep porkies away from our apple trees, I'm positive it would go viral. They're basically land beavers but dumber; they have knack for finding corners and standing their ground...because they have nowhere else to go.

We have one resident porky that has a lame right paw and can't climb all that well, so he stays on the ground and eats the drops. We leave him alone and keep the dogs away.

I've been quilled multiple times, with my wife pulling the quills out of my hand between the thumb and index finger with a pliers. We cut the tips off first but from my experience that's all BS.

Between my home adventures and catching them in my coyote sets, I could write a book. Please let me know your porky recipes!

Thought this was a hand count ...who saw the movie ..

They kill my hemlock, beech and cherry trees at camp by the dozens. Almost very lab I've ever owned got at least one face full of quills. They usually don't get a pass from me unless I'm deer or turkey hunting and don't want to spook game.

I'm a typical meat and potatoes Redneck................with that, I will say the last one I cooked was stir-fried in bite sized pieces, in Smart Balance, then I made a good brown gravy with the pan drippings and put it over baked potatoes. Even my Bride liked it, and she was not a big meat eater at all.
