Barreled actions - 11/02/22 12:54 PM
Recommendations for outfits where a guy can buy just the barreled actions for various guns like savage axis, Ruger Americans Mossberg Patriots ect ?
I almost always end up replacing the stocks or mounds anyway so don't see much reason for paying the extra money for them when all I need is the barreled action.
Can't seem to find anyone that sells the barrels actions for these budget rifles. Howa minis remmeys and the tlnicer stuff yes but not the budget stuff.
Mabye I'm just missing something
I don't think your missing it I have never seen a barreled action for a Patriot, axis or Ruger
some savage target actions
if you catch one of those on a sale you probably pay less than if you have to special order a barreled action.
those are production guns , they try and use as many of the same parts and have as few difference in them from caliber to caliber
because efficiency in production is how they make the price point.
if they didn't have a basic plastic stock on the gun it would need a different box , a different box would mean stocking another item
few people buying those budget guns are going to do much more than toss an optic on it and call it good enough for deer season.
Savage Axis is a one size fits everything action it is long action only so that all the actions are the same. the stock mold has a short and long magazine hole but is otherwise the same
everything is about having the fewest parts to build and stock on those.
before the axis or edge as it first came out they made the Stevens M200 it was the budget version of the 10/110 they also did it only as a long action but offered it in some short action cartridge's also it was a top fed blind box mag and all the stocks were the same
with a removable mag the could make the receiver more rigid with a smaller ejection port cut and cut manufacturing time.
I like my patriot and it even wears the original stock , I did spring for the predator model with threaded muzzle and I have a Hornady cheek riser bag on it to get my cheek weld right.
experimenting and building is fun but at some point I settled on a few cartridges and sought to build myself guns that fit the purpose
my 308 Mossberg Patriot predator is on of those I thought about replacing the stock on it but it shoots well and the Hornady bag gets me the right height and holds 2 mags and 5 rounds in loops so it is always ready to grab and go
my M500 mossberg shotgun might look a little strange with a 20 inch barrel and a Morgan pad on the stock. but it fits me just right and the proof is in the dead birds.
now rather than collect every gun I can I am trying to spend more time shooting and more of my money making ammo to shoot more.

I've bought some Howa barreled actions from Brownells in the past. No problems with them. If the action is shipped it has to go through an FFL.

Way way further ahead to buy used Axis or even a new one compared to a barreled action, even if you're going to chuck the stock.
For 350-400 you can buy a 110 action, not barreled from JA outdoors in Idaho. There again, until you buy a barrel and stock you'll have as much in it as buying a complete gun. IMO.
