The 600 and 660's typically shoot but the 6.5 mag and 350 mag crippled on one end and killed on the other.

One of the top 3 guns I regret ever selling.

I have a 600 in 6mm. Shoots far better than I do. Been a pile of deer killed with that thing.

I have a 243 in a 660. The rifle I most regret getting rid of is a model 600 in 308.

Oh yeah. REM 600 is a deer killing machine. .308 here, loaded down to about like a hot 30-30 round.

They weren't all Mohawks. Mines not. Seems like Mohawk was the slightly cheaper version. Still a 600 though. They made a 660 also.
I've never met anyone that had owned one that didn't like it.
Great for deer hunting in 6mm, .308, 35 Rem, .243. Short enough to use in a stand easily and with a scope good on out there. Buddy of mine bought one in .222 and with minor tweaking made it accurate enough to hunt groundhogs with.
IMO the Model 7 that replaced it was just as good but they quit making it also.

That's one ugly rifle but I'd buy it to use as a tomato cage stake. Gotta be real cheap though wink

Would like to own a 6mm in the 600 Mohawk or the 788. Heck, I'd really like a 700 in 6mm.

Did Remington offer a 6mm in the Model 7?

A guy brought a bunch of guns to work selling for his father in law. I missed out on that gun by 20 minutes he sold it for 300 bucks. Ended up with a mint wingmaster for 275 so wasnt all bad.

Re: One of my Favorite Rifles - 11/03/22 03:49 PM

remington made the 600 first, had the vent rib, walnut stock 18.5" barrel, then they dropped the rib made the barrel 20" long called it the 660, when it was discontinued remington had the 600 mohawk made under contract, barrel was back to 18.5 " no rib and a stained hardwood stock. the 6.5 and 350 mags had a 5 piece walnut/maple laminated stock.

Re: One of my Favorite Rifles - 11/03/22 05:40 PM

My first gun was a 600 Mohawk in 308 my dad bought for me 44 years ago. I still have it and still hunt with it. I bought my son his first in 243 just like the one pictured. Unfortunately I had to kill the first buck with it. Also have a vent ribbed 308 I bought from a guy here. I replaced the plastic trigger guards on all of them with a black machined aluminum guard I bought on gunbroker. They used to cost $75 but the last I looked they were up to $90. The 600s and 760 carbines I just can't pass up.

Re: One of my Favorite Rifles - 11/03/22 09:31 PM

Well,,,,,That .350 RM ought to kill any beast you're likely to come up against there in Central Pennsylvania. I hear they're brutal to shoot. Of course you'd never feel that on a game shot. Kinda like 3" magnum on turkey. They only hurt when you're shooting them off of the patterning bench. I can't feel the recoil shooting a bird.

I was kinda looking for a .350 when I bought mine in .308 oh so many many years ago. Not that many 600s ought there so I took what I could get and was happy.
AS they shoot a .358 bullet, my plan was to use it with lead .358 pistol bullets just to play with and then work up a load for the .358 180g bullet and duplicate the Rem. 35 velocity to shoot deer with here local. 35 RM was easier to get brass for back then too. I bet ammo is tough to get for it now.
Then, if I wanted to take it out west I could use the full throttle .350 RMs to elk hunt with. But that was all years ago, back when I had a full head of hair and a lot of big ideas.
I'm plenty happy with my 600 in .308. It'll sure tip a deer over.

I have a Remington 660 in .222. A sweet rifle to shoot and shoots tight. I am fortunate to reload for it and have about 400 cases for it. I haven't seen ammo for it in the stores in ages.
