Old Three Toes

Old Three Toes - 11/03/22 02:40 AM

I had to share this.

I’m sure many of you have heard the story of “old three toes” the stock killing wolf in Northwest SD that had a lengthy reign of terror in the early part of the 20th century.

Tens of thousands of dollars of dead livestock. Local, livestock association, and a US Congressional bounty on his head.

Whether you believe the legend or not, they make for some darn good stories.

Old three toes met his demise by government trapper Clyde F. Briggs in 1925.

The stone marker in the second picture marks the location (supposedly) of where he was captured.

97 years later it’s still producing stock killing canines.

Re: Old Three Toes - 11/03/22 04:23 PM

Interesting reading on the story of the wolf, Three Toes. They believe he was the "last" buffalo wolf, but have now found similar DNA in the Great Lakes wolves.

Precious little on the internet about Clyde Briggs. Like most of that type of men, writers, historians and educators don't want to write much about hard men who did hard things that made this country great. Like the trappers of old, you can find their stories, but they aren't the stuff of American legend that they should be.

Re: Old Three Toes - 11/03/22 10:08 PM

I know the history of "Old Three Toes". Having spent a lifetime trapping wolves in Alaska, Idaho, Wyoming, Russia, Mongolia, I understand the "magic". Thanks for the post, Boone. I understand the "magic" of those coyotes hooked up in the shadow of that rock cairn where Old Three Toes met his demise. Neat history...Thanks.

Yes it is. He was known in quite a large area but caused most of the problems in SD.
