Ardelle Grawe passed

Ardelle Grawe passed - 11/11/22 04:37 PM

Ardelle Grawe passed away on 11/1. He was 80 years old. Lifelong trapper and lure maker and supply dealer, he needs no introduction to the trapping community.

Lots of Midwest trappers went to his "Trapper's Days" in the 80s, basically a mini convention with demos running constantly. Very innovative, good trapper and snare man and made many contributions to the industry. He had the knowledge, ability, and work ethic to pile up large catches of whatever animal he was trapping. His books are some of the best in the business if you are interested in hard core, numbers trapping. He instructed as many students as probably anyone in the business.

Married to his wife Barb for 42 years, he will be missed, but not forgotten.

Thank you for posting this Gerald. I haven't spoken to Ardelle for some years but he certainly was a staple part of our trapping world for a long time.

Last time he and I spoke was back in the days when I sponsored the Hughesville trapping Days shows. He sure had a long drive to attend.

RIP Ardelle

Re: Ardelle Grawe passed - 11/11/22 05:35 PM

I’m a fairly new trapper and I called up there a few years ago to order some boards, books, bait and lure. Haha what a guy. He talked my arm off, was very kind and shared his wealth wisdom to this new trapper. I got such a kick out of him and the way he spoke. He reminded me of my grandpa who lives in the same general area and within a few years in age. It’s sad to hear he passed. I planned on calling soon to order some more supplies and hear some stories.

RIP
He was a great guy. I used to order all the companies trapping supplies we sold through him every year. He always repacked all the cases of traps and supplies into flat rate boxes to ship to Alaska and save us money. Fun guy to chat with always enjoyed talking with him.

He would send me one of these refrigerator magnets he made in a order every now and then.

Re: Ardelle Grawe passed - 11/12/22 03:01 AM

I grew up just 45 or so miles from Ardelle’s place and then went to Tech School in Wahpeton, just a few miles away from Grawes. Stopped by for supplies many times and attended at least three of his trapper days. All around great guy willing to help a struggling kid. Learned so much from him and his books.
He told me once, I don’t understand guys that only trap a little. Just like the guy that stops for one beer. His thought was if you are at the bar, get drunk. If you are going to trap, go all in. All or nothing!
The badger in a barrel was just plain crazy.

Re: Ardelle Grawe passed - 11/12/22 03:29 PM

I remember the "Badger in the Barrel" contest distinctly. Was there in '81-'83 and had a good time. Ardelle was not the easiest guy to talk to in those early years but that was common of guys who learned furharvesting "tricks" the hard way. As he got older, he got a lot more open on his info sharing and was very helpful to those starting out. To make the catches he did, he covered a lot of country as that area of MN did not hold extremely high populations of furbearers. It took a lot of work. .......................... the mike

Re: Ardelle Grawe passed - 11/17/22 02:51 AM

Back in the early 70's I trapped heavy for Michigan red fox.
To up my program I traveled "out west" to take 1 on 1 lessons from one of the country's best...Ardell Grawe. I got my money's worth!! It was an intense day on his line. Arielle was
all business from start to finish. Over the ensuing years that followed, my
catch went up a lot. In my opinion Ardell Grawe earned his place
his place as one of the best in this sport. And the products
he made were some of the most effective I ever used.
They don't make guys like him anymore.

Bruce, if you don't get a lot of responses to your Ardelle Grawe post, it's because this cycled through already.
