Unique Color Coyotes - 11/11/22 05:18 PM

Did not want to muddy up Warrior's thread of the one he posted today but I also had an odd one this morning. All of these were caught in North Carolina.

Do not think I have caught one this red before.

I want a blonde like one I saw years ago. Almost white.

Re: Unique Color Coyotes - 11/11/22 05:26 PM

The pelt picture of the blonde I posted makes it look more red than it actually is. It is really more blonde, closer to the shade in the wet pic.

Got 2 blond in same set a couple days apart in Illinois.

One farm I used to trap it was a Guarantee that you would always catch 2 blonde or red coyotes a season . Where we live at now it’s not uncommon to see a few black ones a year . I’ve got a trail camera picture somewhere that had 2 black ones on it .

Big red one - I'm 6 foot 1 and around 240 pounds, so he was a big honest 40 pounder

Harold, come up to my part of the state. I guarantee that if you catch one in this rain we're having, it will be RED, as in a big red clay mud ball, lol.

I wonder why you don't see these odd colors in western coyotes?
Dog genes? If so, why no dog genes in western coyotes?

Only odd one I got here was many years ago. All light silver with a thin black strip down middle of its back. Really looked odd next to the others.

Dog genes most likely the culprit, Wolfe genes too. There is plenty of DNA studies out there verifying this.
The reason you don't see coyotes crossing with dogs out west is because there are plenty of other coyotes available to mate with.
Other regions where coyotes have recently made the long trek to get there, likely did not always have another coyote to mate with when the mating season came in. I suspect that once coyotes become established in these new areas, the crossbreeding with dogs ceases to happen, but the tainted gene pool from prior generations will still continue to pop up for many years.

Here is the before and after of the red one I caught this week. Getting it dry and cleaned up a bit made a huge difference,

Re: Unique Color Coyotes - 11/13/22 08:52 PM

The one pictured was caught in south central PA IN 2018 .At the time it was just my 3rd coyote ever .As you can see it's back was almost silver and it's belly was very pale .I shipped it to FHA .for the May 2018 sale .It was graded 3x-2x LG SELECT HVY A-B. AND IT SOLD FOR $125.00. I was very happy to get that much for it .Even though I HAD A LIMITED AMOUNT OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT COYOTES AND HOW THEY ARE GRADED it was oblivious that this one was better than average Just so I did not get the idea that trapping was a money making endeavor at the FHA SALE IN Jan 2021 I sold 23 red fox for a total of $114.50 .And just to see how it can be I received $5.00 more dollars for 6 raccoon . So not quite $125 .00 But along came my sale of a catch of 3 coyote I had in the 2021 season 3 COYOTES for which I got $9.00 more dollars Now for the total of $128.50 for 30 pelts .But it was a very nice coyote especially for a novice coyote trapper .I AM TRULY AMAZED AT THE BLACK PHASE COYOTE S pictured here . This is what makes trapping so much fun You just never know what will be waiting for you when you come around the next turn. Thanks for all the cool pictures This an an awesome t [Linked Image]

Re: Unique Color Coyotes - 11/14/22 10:49 AM

one of the new guys that i helped start to trap a few years ago 3-4 , got an all-black coyote and a blonde Coyote this year i have never got either in 50+ years lol

Re: Unique Color Coyotes - 11/14/22 12:45 PM

Yes I had other trappers catching coyotes as incidentals all around me for about 30 years before I finally caught my first one .But I am certain the young man you helped out to get his start has a smile on his face every time he thinks about those coyotes. And remembers the guidance you shared with him to make him a trapper .

Jim

Back in the day Pawnee County had some real red nasties. Maybe the genetics have improved!

Re: Unique Color Coyotes - 11/17/22 02:34 PM

About 30 years ago A friend showed up at my place of employment .I drove a forklift and he knew I was in and out of the building all the time .He just waited for me to come out .When I saw him I knew something was up .He came over top me and said look in the back of my Chevy Blazer ..I drove over and looked in .There was an off color coyote in the back .He ask what it was I said coyote .He said are you sure how do you know .I don't want to go to the taxidermy shop if it is a stray dog . I SAID LOOK AT IT'S NOSE AND TEETH . I t is not a dog .But as pretty as some of the off colored ones can be you have to think some of them have some dog genetics mixed in their DNA .This has been a great thread with some really interesting pics.
