Best way to quit a job

Best way to quit a job - 11/14/22 07:35 PM

The two weeks notice never seemed to work out well for me but just leaving without any notice dosen't seem right, so what , in y'all opinions are the best was to quit a job in a professional manner.

Re: Best way to quit a job - 11/14/22 07:53 PM

The two weeks is still considered professional courtesy. However in practice employers terminate immediately rather than have an employee riding the clock for two weeks.

Act accordingly.

If your quitting for more money go to the head honcho. Tell him you have another job offer for x amount of money and see if they will match it or offer you some other incentive. If not be polite and give him a written two week notice.

Re: Best way to quit a job - 11/14/22 08:12 PM

I would go talk to your immediate supervisor and tell him exactly what the situation was and leave on good terms, even if that means being escorted out immediately.
That way you can say you did the right thing
If your supervisor is the reason, go to his boss

No reason to burn bridges unless you have to

Why is the two week thing not working? Best way to leave to make sure you get all your PTO and possible some extra weeks pay, or they tell you not to come in and still have to pay you for those weeks when i left my hospital job. Also keeps some avenues open if for some reason you need to go back there.

Everyone thinks they are sticking it to the boss if they just walk out Truth is more often than not they do not care They are being paid to do a job and will just put someone in the job as they are told to do .And no matter how skilled they are all of us are replaceable Perhaps not as fast or smart or dedicated but will be there doing what he must do to keep his job .It i better of you to rise above the urge to try to show someone that you made things worse for them as payback for some thing that happened on the job

I say ignore all these other posts and take Savell's advice once he has time to reply. Going forward, you'll find it a lot less hassle to just PM him for advice on your important life choices from the start.

Re: Best way to quit a job - 11/14/22 09:12 PM

I would line up my next position and then give the standard two weeks notice. If you have good reasons to leave this job place to move on you also don't need to get into a bidding war for wages and benefits in my opinion.
I gave a two months notice when I left my dairy herd managers position so they would have time to find my replacement. They had no one when I left and yest those were two of the tuffest months I have ever had in the work force.

That's a bit of a loaded question without a cut and dried answer.
There are variables at play which will dictate the proper procedure.
Generally, discuss it with (whoever) and come to a mutual agreement that fits the scenario at hand.
Do your part by being the good guy the best you can.
Don't scar your reputation any more than may be necessary.
Hope you're "movin' on up" smile

Don’t burn any bridges. If the company is dramatically dependent upon you and have been good to you give them as much time as they Need. Or as much time as you can afford to give them. One company I worked for 10 years who’s good to me and I gave them one years notice.

In my case they had to bring in the national guard to replace the people that replaced me. My supervisor walked out a few weeks after I left because they were so short staffed and one of the places I delivered to couldnt wait a whole two hours to get a basic office supply order that they couldnt be bothered to be placed in time. My manager made her, or well tried to make her, do the delivery so she walked out. I left when the day before the clot shot mandate went into effect by the hospital, which was two weeks before Joe's nationalo mandate was announced.

Re: Best way to quit a job - 11/14/22 11:18 PM

Of course give notice if possible. I've left jobs without notice but only because I was so mad if I didn't leave right then I'd have ended up going to jail, lol.

If you're really not wanting to work the full two weeks for some reason, another thing I've done in the past is told my manager I was taking another job and they wanted me to start next week but I told them I needed to give them 2 weeks notice first. In that case, they were happy to let me leave after just finishing out the week instead of working the full 2 weeks.

Re: Best way to quit a job - 11/14/22 11:33 PM

Leaving on good terms is best thing to do. I went back to two of the jobs I left and am still friends with both. But, if the job is terrible or unsafe quit on the spot. I quit one job the Friday after Thanksgiving when I got knocked of the wall setting trusses; by the drugged up operator. If I did not know I could go back to a previous job I might have been forced to stay.

If it's a giant corporate suckhole where you're a number without a face, then do what you feel like. They won't care. They may not even replace you... They'll just pawn your job off on some poor schlep that's already overworked.

If it's a local gig where you actually get to see the guy who signs your paycheck, and they've been fair in their dealings with you... Be a man and give them the chance to respond in kind.

I gave 2 weeks notice. I "retired" but 7 years earlier than planned. The people that were a pain in my tailpipe knew that I had enough dirt on them to likely send them to jail so they stayed WELL clear of me for the next 2 weeks.

Re: Best way to quit a job - 11/15/22 12:25 AM

I was at Lowes buying a grill on Friday. It was up high and the guy helping me need a forklift which was tied up. In the about an hour that we waited for the forklift I watched that guy hustle around helping other people and checked in with me 3 times letting me know the status of the forklift. I heard him telling one of the other customers that this was his last day. I was impressed. I've never seen someone work so hard on their last day so I asked him about it. It was true, he had just moved to FL from Ohio a few months ago and picked up the Lowes job but was moving to a job that paid twice as much. That impressed me more, good for him. I told him I've never seen anyone work so hard on their last day and tipped him $20. Any setbacks a guy with that kind of work ethic suffers will only ever be temporary.

There has been individuals give their 2 week notice and the next day they are walked out. I don't have many years left and have mixed feeling on how to go about it when the time comes. My thought just might let them know before I walk out the same day. Just don't know.....

I work for the same Fortune 500 company that Wolfdog does and I have to say I don't agree with this. I've found them to be a great company to work for. We usually always make our quarterly bonuses... we'll be getting the one from Q3 on Dec. 6th. All the employees in the entire corporation just last week got a raise that averaged over $1/hr company wide. Full time employees have pretty good, affordable healthcare, plenty of sick time, as well as vacation and personal time off. Part time employees even get vacation and personal time off, and an available health plan (although that one sucks). For over a year during the Covid BS, the employees were given a MONTHLY bonus of $300 just for showing up to work. If you need a day off for whatever reason, there is no problem getting it. And personally, I work M-F 6am-3pm (actually either Tue.-Fri or Mon-Thurs. as I'm only working part time right now by choice). I've worked for plenty of mom and pop type businesses over the years, but none have treated me as well as this "giant corporate suckhole" does.

Re: Best way to quit a job - 11/15/22 01:52 AM

2 weeks notice is the right thing to do IF the company does the right thing by emplyees that are leaving. If the company gives the middle finger to employees that have given notice, that is what they deserve in return. I hope that is not the case in your situation. A respectfull departure is the best for all involved, if all will do that.

Years ago I worked at a company that had been a great place to work for many years but that all changed in a short time with new senior management. Suddenly the long term employees were no longer valued. A coworker once said if he were to leave he would love to have a flatbed roll up with a band playing "You can take this job and shove it, I ain't workin here no more." Sounded like a splendid idea to me, but that was a special case.

Gave them the two years I told them I would and just not making the money I need right now and with as many better playing places hiring diant make any sense for me to stick around here . Nothing , much, against the company just got stuff needs to be handled and I'm not interested in working here anymore.
I've about quit here before and told the store supervisor and and store manager and they where ecool about it. Other places I've worked , especially small places just seem to take it as a insult and make the last too weeks as crappy as possible.

Sench down other employment then make your move. Try not to burn bridges because with this economy they may be one of the few hiring if things go south at the new place. Remember last one hired first one let go. I've always found that it easier to find work when you have work plus no added pressure to take something to pay the bills that you wouldn't otherwise do.

Re: Best way to quit a job - 11/15/22 04:12 AM

I’m old school. I would give two weeks notice even though the same company would usually tell you this is your last day if they want to terminate you. I worked for a company for twenty years and was unexpectedly let go one morning and the supervisor said it was my last day. I was not bitter and ended up using the same supervisor for a reference for my next job. He gave a good reference and my new boss said my previous supervisor’s reference is one of the reasons I got the new job. Most of the time layoffs or terminations aren’t personal. Even if it is, I would just get on with my life since I couldn’t do anything about it anyway. If you take it personal, it may come back to haunt you.

You're lucky then. There are a few good corporate gigs. But for the most part they live up to the bad rep.

Corporate gigs are like any other. They tell you what they need you to do, you agree on the price to do it and at the end of the week, bi-week or month they settle and it starts all over again.

I enjoy the whole “I gave them 20 years of my life” without mentioning they settled the deal every week etc. lol

Re: Best way to quit a job - 11/15/22 12:41 PM

I have walked mid day when the boss showed his hind end and I have given 2 weeks.

Coming from a construction back ground and having worked for several companies each year I got to where I had no loyalty to any company.

Where Im At now I have been 16 years. If I get the job I'm hoping to get and my start date is after the first of the year I won't give notice. I will take my months vacation and try out the new job before I quit my old job. If I quit I won't be going back and it's a huge company. The sold us I lost my 30 and out retirement and pension multipliers. I'm just a number and know it. As long as it takes for them to hire and post job passions it will be a few months before I'm replaced and my spot will be filled with overtime tell then. This company hired a bunch of people then layed them off 2 weeks later. Many that had good jobs they quit just to be layed off. The company knew they were going to make cuts before they hired them. They didn't even get trained on one job or thought their probation before they were layed off. I feel no obligation to this company.

Now if it were a small company that takes care of its people I would give them all the time I could and as long of notice.

Re: Best way to quit a job - 11/15/22 12:41 PM

There is nothing wrong with a company telling you it's your last day when you give them a 2 week notice, providing they pay you for the 2 weeks. No one gets hurt in that scenario. Pushing you out the door with no pay when notice is given is asking for no notice from employees that leave in the future.

A lot of people seem to like the euphoria that comes from "sticking it to the man"... typically you just stick it to your coworkers who have to ramp up to fill the gap. Give notice, be professional, help with the transition.

Give a 2 week notice to your boss IMMEDIATELY AFTER you put a cake and a Sorry For Your Loss card in break room. The cake write something clever something like... The job was good, but cake is better. On the inside of the card write, I'm the loss for this place.

Re: Best way to quit a job - 11/15/22 02:07 PM

Best of luck to you wolfdog. Have you applied and gotten hired at one of those better paying places yet? Is there any chance you could work part time at the new place for awhile to make sure it's a job you'll like? What type of work are you going to? I think most of us know where you're working now. I'd give the 2 weeks as you'll probably be hired back if you ever want to go back.

There's a reason I'm asking those questions. I've left jobs I wished I hadn't in hindsight. I went to one and it was the worst job I ever had. I worked there a month total and gave my 2 weeks notice at 2 weeks when I found out it wasn't going to get better from the other workers that were there. I fulfilled my 2 week notice and was told by my supervisor I was the only one who ever did. She kept asking me to stay longer but I just hated it. The turnover rate was astronomical to me. I was the 20th person to come and go in a 5 month period so they averaged losing 1 a week.

The advantage you have is you're young. Just get into something eventually you want to do long term.

Re: Best way to quit a job - 11/15/22 05:38 PM

First make dang sure you have another better job than the one you’re leaving.
Once that’s in place tell the new Boss you will put in your two week notice at present job and would like to start on such and such day, BUT if they let you go early, could you start early at the new job.
Once all that’s in place, turn in your tel week notice.
I’ve never had an issue leaving employment and feel pretty confident I could go back to any of them…not that I ever would, but I could, lol.
