Well, this was not fun. Maple tree limb came down - 11/17/22 03:25 PM

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DRIVEWAY!! Over 20 Feet in length. Almost 8 inches in diameter at the base , where it broke off the Silver Maple Tree. Spent almost half an hour breaking off the smaller branches. Then, I tried SEVERAL !!! times to pull it by hand out of the Driveway. Neighbor saw me struggling with the tree limb, and rushed on over with a Chainsaw. Cut the whole darn Limb up in just a few minutes, and tossed it into the Woods.

This getting older, sure is the pits!!!! mad

The whole limb was dead, so I am certain it would have burned great in a wood stove.

I've got a pecan next to the house some fool planted forty years ago that does that. I'm just waiting for the big one to land in my kitchen.

Take it down before it does. I knocked the top out of a maple that was dieing and leaning over.my daughter's room last year. I left the log because it's where I hang my kill cones for chicken processing.

They were cute when planted.
I feel this same pain.

Silver maples are beautiful, fast growing trees, but are very bad at breaking and dropping limbs. The trees tend to rot inside easily. Once they first break, they will usually continue to break and drop more branches more frequently. I would recommend having the tree cut down.

I've looked into it but I need to get a lift in to do it as it would be threading the needle to get it down in pieces.

I had a big limb snap off a burr oak in my yard. It was about 15" at the base. I could never find the time to cut it up. Then I tested positive for covid, couldn't go anywhere so I spent my time cutting up the wood. One positive thing about covid finding the time to clean that mess up.

Pine is better grin

Silver is on the lower side of firewood over here.
Though it'd sure boil traps.
Rock, or Sugar, or Hard, or whatever it's name maple is
very good in my region.

Been trying to propagate some Jap maple.
Not having much luck.

Learned a lot about trees on here.

Here too. Have a wide variety from red and burr oak, ash, ironwood, and elm.

No maple here, our best firewood is Birch and Tamarack.
Gotta mix the tamarack though,it burns hot enough to burn out a stove.
Winters are long here,I burn everything that comes down on the trails too.

I actually like it when a limb comes down in the yard. Gives me a chance to break out the chainsaw and add a little wood to the bonfire pile. Yet, it's not a huge job so it's more fun than work.

I like the smell of birch when it's burning. I've never burned tamarack, but heard it spits a lot when it's burning.

I burn wood that other people dont burn.
I cut and burn some Bam,I think you call it cottonwood down there.
People dont burn it for several reasons-bam get big and are very heavy, and when dry it burns fast but not too hot.

I like it because the beaver drop them all over the place, and I have to cut some every year anyway. When dry it is very lightweight,it splits effortlessly and makes great kindling.
It is good to get a quick burning fire going in a hurry when first coming to camp in winter, then add better wood.

I like to burn it in fall mixed with spruce, when you dont need a long lasting fire just to take out the dampness.

I usually burn Oak or Ash, but a number of Silver Maples either came down or had to be taken down in my yard. How long does it take to dry if cut and split?

Silver maple seasons quick. 3 or 4 months is all it needs to season, unless the pieces are huge. We used to burn a lot of silver maple because the trees broke so often.

Silver maple is common here, so a lot of it becomes firewood. Good enough when it's mixed with sugar maple, cherry, etc. or on days when all you need to do is take the chill out of the house. But I agree, it isn't the best yard tree because of rot and breaking limbs

Last week I had a big limb break off a huge dying ash and come down across the lane to my wood shed and burn pile. I cut it on either side of the lane and drug the butt end to the edge of the woods with my backhoe. The rest is still in the yard. I don't have to mow until spring...I'll get to cutting it up or dragging it away by then...maybe.
